View Full Version : I got car problems

I bought a thing that hooks up to my car's cigarette lighter, to make the car smell better. When I put it in it sparked and blew out the light above my head, and then I realized my radio and horn don't work anymore either. I could care less about the horn, but not having a radio is killing me. The clock on it still works, but the radio wont come one. I don't think it is the fuse, I was just wondering what else it could be. I have 1989 Chevy Caprice btw.

Its just a fuse buddie , easy to repair . I would start by replacing all of them just make sure their the same amp .

All of them seems excessive. I normally just work my way through them having a look at each to make sure they are still intact.

If you have the manual just have a look at that and it should tell you which are the radio, cigarette lighter, etc. and check them out.

It normally tells you on the underside of the fuse cover, or beside the fuse itself. In any case it's easy to work out, it's the blown one.

When he says "same amp" he means same as the one being replaced, not all the same. That would be mad.

Just get rid of the car, I think mouldy might be interested.

You might have to ship it to Canadia though.

True but they don't always say.
For example, my dad's van just has a bunch of fuses and when you look in the manual there's a diagram of the fuse boxes and what each fuse is for.
Easier than pulling every fuse one at a time to look for the blown one.

If you're an electrician like.

Otherwise it's easier to look on the cover or beside the fuse and see if it's written there.

If it's not there and there's a diagram in the manual then that might be the easiest way. However you can usually see if a car fuse is blown just by looking at it. Don't they blow at the top so you can see it easily, that point being weaker than the contacts.

Yup. It's time to get rid of it.

Especially if the ashtray is full.

i'd run it off a cliff and claim on the insurance, it pays 2/1 if he hits blackjack.

I know with my car, the plate you take off the dash to access fuses has a diagram on which one does what. You might be doomed to have a smelly car though : /

Before you ship it to Canada. I wanted to ask you something - how big
is the gas tank of you car?

I took out the fuse that was labeled Radio, but it looked ok. My manual for the care basically tells me nothing about the fuses. Whats this about same amp? Is there more then one fuse for the radio? What would be they be called... Their all labeled.

@brotherdoobie. Well when it was empty, I put 30 Gallons into it before it filled up. Costed me $50 to fill it up too. :-p

Outside the car? Don't you mean in the engine compartment?

Don't even get me started on car troubles.

Lets just say that having the tread sliced out from 2 of your tires and a couple 360's in the middle of the road is NOT fun times. :(

As for not having a CD player or even a radio in the car.. I can only imagine the pain!

Would this fuse be in the fuse box, or on something completely separate. I should just follow every wire coming out from the radio to what ever it leads to huh? I have no idea what your talking about :(

I know that the American gallon is a bit less than the proper English gallon. However are you absolutely certain you put 30 gallons into it. That's about 110 litres and I know for a fact that a 4L V8i Discovery has a 95 litre tank.

Do all cars in America have ridiculously large fuel tanks.

And also, are you really only paying $1.66 / gallon. I know it's cheap in the colonies but that seems phenomenal awesome.

No it was around $2.36/gallon, this was a weird time when gas prices went really low for like a month. Now were back to $2.80 or more. But I am almost certain that I can put 30 gallons into my tank.

Well lets see a couple days ago I put $46 in my tank and it filled it up a little over half way. The gas at the time was $2.87/ gallon. 46 divided by 2.87 is 16.027* so yea it's not to far off see :-p

But if you put in 30 gallons and it cost $50 then that's $1.66 per gallon. Irrespective of how big your tank is.

Do you realise you're trying to explain mathematics to someone who used the word "costed"?

:lol::earl:

Fair point. In jimbo's ABV v % thread I was going to talk about Avogadro's number and how it related to ABV and ABW but decided against that.

I though arithmetic this simple would be OK, even here. Obviously I was overly generous in estimating the potential level of understanding.

1989 Chevy Caprice fuel tank capacity is 24 gallons.

Cheers, that makes more sense.

I had calculated it at around 22, but that was mostly based on the pish he was talking and not really allowing for the smaller American gallon.
