How much are your monthly seedbox fees?

None. My Estonian friend is kind enough to let me use his dedicated server for free :)

I pay 40 $ / month. It`s a 100Mb/ 100 Mb server, 8 slots.

I voted the first option but I don't rent a seedbox. I'll add a "blank vote".

Would it be too much to ask you where you rent it?

i'm looking for a more affordable option :)

I don't mind saying that I'm rather shocked to see people paying $80-90/month for a server.

Why wouldn't you rather pay just $14/month for a news server and max your connection?

newsgroup is better than torrent BTW

It's all about sharing . The more fast and qualitative seedboxes - the faster the download speed (on more torrents) .

How does this newsgroup look like? Do you need a client installed on your PC to use it? What`s the difference between Bitorrent and News server or newsgroup. Never heard about it...

For me, it was for 3-4 months to buffer my accounts and get some trackers i wanted with it

For the newsgroup, you have to pay each month for it that's what i don't like...but now i can leech the hell out of tracker sites for a year or 2 :D

Sorry for the noob question but...

Can you rent a seedbox just for a couple os months?
Or do you have to stick with it for a full year or so?

I have used seedboxes for a long time. Voted accordingly.

Or you could get a rapidshare account which is way cheaper than usenet or a seedbox (about ~75USD / year). The only downside is that there is a 'limit' which amounts to approximately ~152GB / month. There's a lot more content and theoretically infinite retention rates.

Insanity.

For an additional $25, you could get a Newshosting account for an entire year with unlimited bandwidth and download everything you get from trackers. Plus, you will max out your download speed 100% of the time. No uploading or seeding at all.... and it's completely safe.

There are guides in the Newsgroup section. Yes you need a client. I use Grabit.

It's no harder to learn than torrents. If anyone wants help setting up a server or wants recommendations, they're more than welcome to find me on MSN. Don't come to MSN asking me about what newsgroups are as that's all answered in the Newsgroups section.

Edit:re-read quoted post

I'm renting Leeware for $20. Speed isn't that great, small hard drive, but it's cheap. Maybe I'll upgrade if my new Salsa choreography starts selling better, then I'll have the extra cash.

Or maybe it's time to jump into the world of newsgroups... though it sounds to simple to just download. Where's the thrill of finding that seconds-old high-demand dvdrip and start seeding at a zillion bytes a second? Plus community is important also to me.

He probably meant GB, no way you can push 5300 TB in 55 days unless you are on an unlimited dedicated gigaE line.

I used newsgroups for about 7 months. I didn't max out my connection, only got 8 mB/s down. Had a 100/10 so I should have been able to get an additional 2mB/s. :P

But yeah it was nice. I just found it to be kinda lonely though, not much community going unless you read all those text files people upload, but then you'd have to download them to read them and stuff. Also I found it hard to find everything I wantedm, had to go to a bunch of different nzb indexing sites and search and even then I sometimes wouldn't find what i was looking for. There wasn't much scene material either, and the stuff I could find had the nfo's ruined and replaced with that Teabag stuff.

I just think bittorrent is more fun, but I might get a new giganews account as it was quite useful sometimes.

Lol yeah I just re-read that post... the dude for sure meant 5300 gb, unless he has no idea what a TB is :P.

This went from a seedbox poll/thread to a newsgroups thread? NG are old school and still widely used but not as good as BT or as fast with releases for the most part, plus most people have to pay for something you can get for free, faster and easier for the most part from BT. I use NG's on occasion and still find them useful for some odd things I need or older files but they are not as good as fun as bt is all around. It is safer than bt. A dying breed indeed who still stick with it daily though..... As for maxxing out connections I can do it with both so its a matter of what better suits the user. I prefer BT.

With a seedbox, for 30-40 $ you can upload quite some stuff in your beloved trackers. Then you quit the seedbox, and leech up to a 1:1 ratio (or even worst). Depending on your connection, you can survive some time.

I'm on the uploading procedure now, so i can leech after ;)

Yeah, I used to use them quite a bit but they're alright if you can't find something old elsewhere.
I don't rent a seedbox. :( Can't afford it because I'm a tightwad. :P

Also have a good specced dedicated server from vectoral. 5 TB bandwith. I pay $219/month.

I recommend them greatly and there service is 2nd to none. They took a little longer in setting my server up for me and for my inconvenience they gave me an extra 2GB RAM for free on top of the 2GB RAM it had :D

My friend signed up for the same box as me, the spring athlon, but accidentally got the wrong box. They noticed he had got the wrong one about 2 hours after they had given him access. 1 hour later the problem was solved and he got an extra 120 gig harddrive to make up for it. They have the best support/service ever.

I got bored with newsgroups... yes I got things at my max speed but the community was poo.

Since using torrents and joining private torrent sites speeds are not much of an issue and I get access to a great community, can't beat it!

Disagree...Newsgroups are great, and so are the speeds but the content you can find on trackers like BitMeTV, OiNK, and the packs you can get on sites like FTN and RTS you can't find anywhere else....all file sharing should be free!
