NEC, Pioneer, Plextor, Lite-On, LG, and BenQ have the best DVD writers...

And the best DVD media are the ones that are made in Japan (Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, etc).

I'm a fan of NEC burners. They've always done me right.

As for media, it just depends on what your DVD player will play. I find that Memorex DVD-Rs work best .

...and for DL DVD media - only go with Verbatim... the rest are error prone...

Good: LG, Pioneer, Lite-On and BenQ.

I used to recommend NEC but no longer since their joint venture with Sony http://www.sonynec-optiarc.com/

Stay away for anything Sony.

For media I like: Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell (all Japan made).

I never saw 18x DVDs to be honest, I think it's some bullshit the company is trying to make you believe
but I might be wrong :(

I had some problems with my ASUS CD-RW, it seemed picky. Didn't want to erase all my cd-rw. Now I have a LG GSA-H22L and works flawlessly. As for the difference between 16x and 18x, I don't think it will really matter. Keep in mind that a DVD-Burner will get to 18x speed writing only at the end of the writing process. And, as someone else noted, I didn't see any 18x blank dvds, either.

Make your mind up.

Yes, "tons of people" that have had problems with Lite-On products most likely can be found on the internet but literlally millions of people that have had no problems at all will not have posted anywhere.

I've had 1 CDRW & 2 DVDRW drives from Lite-On in the last ten years and only one of them has actually gone wrong in all that time.
Yes, Lite-On has been pretty good for me.

Creative Labs, on the other hand, has not.
1x CDROM drive gone bad after 2 months, 4x Soundblaster PCI128 cards were junked because CL ignored the need for WDM drivers for it, 1x Webcam that suddenly failed.
That's a company who's products get no endorsements from me.

Using lg gsa4163b which gives me quality burns esp for brands like
taiyo yuden and verbatim. Cant go wrong with that combination.
Dont forget to get latest firmware for the dvd drvie as well.

Wow, People go for the expensive names?

I have a crappy £18 dvd burner and buy 50 DVD's @ £6 by Replika.

The DVD burner is only an 8x, But i only burn on 4x anyway, So no problem for me. Before anyone asks, I burn on 4 speed because for some reason i thought burning slower ensured better quality on the burn. Maybe im wrong though

The DVD's work fine, Took a while to find something that was available on a budget and good quality though. The ones i used to get before sucked balls, But these i will be staying with.
