Also, my son would recommend Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree and my daughter, Dir en Grey (an acquired taste in my view) and a band called Mindless Self Indulgence (also an acquired taste)

Personally I don't think you can go far wrong with Pink Floyd or Jethro Tull, and perhaps some of the newer chaps like REM.

Check out last.fm (http://www.last.fm) I find a lot of good artists through that site. It logs what you listen to and recommends a few artists every week. Take a look. :D
