Here is the latest Pioneer that uses BOTH popular formats of DVD(+/-).Pioneer 106 (http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acatalog/Hardware_Section__.html).
Highly rated by reviews. :)

Plextor just came out with their first DVD+R drive, and PC Gamer gave it a good review...

I would recommend getting a DVD+R/W drive, or a combo drive.

I have a NEC 1300a which burn +R +RW -R -RW.

I agree with CornerPocket, get a NEC DRW-NE-0ND1100A

The new Plextor DVD Drive has the same components as the NEC, they just changed a few minor things (mostly in the firmware) and put their logo on it.

I started looking into this and I'm gettng confused, is it just the '-' format that comes in different sizes (3.95gigs & 4.7 gigs?) and which format has cheaper disks (write once disks)? Also I've been hearing conflicting things about compatibility, people are saying that - format is more supported by crappy dvd players, but that - format has multiple ?versions? as well as general and authoring modes which make it less reliable.
Basically does anyone with a +/- writer (or whos had both types) have any comment on which is a better buy.

And have people had trouble with cheap dvd media not being recognised, as this seems a frequent complaint

I would go with the Sony DRU-510AX. Nothing but good experiences with mine.

There seems to be a feeling that the -R and the +RW are the best, so one of the dual format drives is really a good option, the Sony is one of the best (assuming you can actualy get hold of one - I waited 6 months before giving up),
otherwise the Pioneer A05/105 is the best model to go for right now.
The new lot of dual format drives are not as mature/reliable as the Sony, and the A05/105 is regarded as one of the best drives to buy

As for the size - AFAIK the only size available is the 4.7GB disks - at least in the UK

+R/RW is technically the best format
