I think it was the US military, along with top US universities.

I could be wrong though.

The internet was created at the insistance of an international fishing consortium, who completely misunderstood the original proposal.

Nope - You're along the right lines :)

It's debatable on when its Genesis truly is, because it can be said that the Internet that we know was started when HTTP was invented in 1990-ish. However the technology, aka the Internet, was developed by the US military as a way to contact each other via secure communications. The first instance of this project was network of (AFAIK) 4 key bases around the country and was called ARPANET (I think it's an acronym, but I'd have to check it up).

The next on the bandwagon were the US universities, then businesses, then consumers. The rest is history.

Hope that clears up a lot of the questions; I don't know the full genesis, but I do know that the Internet that we know did evolve from ARPANET.

....The internet is often referred to as the"WEB" as it was originally conceived by the Welsh Enterprise Board. The internet that we know now is based on th initial idea of connecting all of the computers in Wales with a tiny thread, along which spiders would carry messages.

Anouther interesting statistic about the internet.

Internet Service Providers are asking customers to use darker colours in their images because, when turned into binary they result in smaller numbers. This makes them cheaper because 0's use less electricity to transmit than the 1's. ;)

Illuminati was right in my opinion, for the most part. I think it was invented as a means for communication, maybe for internal secure military communication at first, but evolved into something else. Namely, a way for continents to communicate with each other in the event of a nuclear war. If the fiber optic cables are buried in the sea... so it goes.

Some people just won't follow a link will they?

Here's what's on the site i posted a link to earlier...

Late 60s & Early 70s - Government funding through U. S. Advanced Research Projects Agency created "ARPANET" to develop a communications network for research & military R&D.

1980-1983 - ARPANET interconnected all of the major research and educational networks by establishing a common communications protocol. This network is know today as the "Backbone" of the Internet.

Mid 80s - The National Science Foundation established several supercomputers centers for education and research purposes. They also added significantly to the network "backbone". Limited Commercial traffic was first allowed on the Internet.

1989 to 1991 - Tim Berners-Lee of CERN (a physics particle accelerator laboratory) in Geneva began to develop a simpler method to transfer information. The group developed the concept of hyperlinks within documents to quickly access related information. The project was dubbed the "WWW Project" and is the basis for the HTML Language used in today's Net Browsers. The World Wide Web then is a method of accessing world wide information using these techniques innovated at CERN. We believe that the popularity and growth of the Internet is largely due to this development.

1993 - The National Science Foundation awarded five year agreements to three companies to manage this "Internet". Network Solutions, AT&T and General Atomics were contracted to jointly manage the Internet through an organization called InterNIC (Internal Network Information Center). There now are no restrictions placed on Internet access for commercial companies.

Today - Millions of people have access to the Internet and thousands of companies are already on the Internet along with the educational and research centers. The commercial sector has already surpassed all other groups for host sites and new uses for the Internet are continually being innovated and implemented.

A couple of things lamsey.
Im lazy.
I suffer from "link burnout" because I am exposed to so many.
I skip-over/half-read stuff(like your reply).
The parts I did read made no mention of nuclear war, though.
Links are like ug*censored*en. I don't use them unless I have to.
Last but not least, sometimes you click a link and you don't get what you expect.
Here (http://www.disney.com) is proof.

Lamsey
07-03-2003, 01:57 PM

More stunning information about the internet!!!

In order to increase the speed at which e-mails move around the internet one should use blue text. The colour blue, with the longest wavelength of any of the other colours, travels faster through the pipes. ;)

The US Government and AL Gore helped invent the Internet... hell the Us Government has 100% control over the internet... That's why he/she (it) blacks out webpages showing illegal information about the military and stuff.. Doesnt care much about crack and hack sites yet... and astalavista must change they're location and password like everyday or something to be that secure lol.
