How about telling us what drive you have. what media you are burning it with, what OS you are running, what speed you are burning it at, etc???

What driveR?? I've got an HP dvd840 drive with fujifilm DVD+R discs. I've had problems like this before but it was usually fixed with a simple re-install of imgburn.

I think he means you should try and uninstall the burner through the device manager.

Then reboot and let windows reinstall it and etc.

You could try that, I guess.

How is the drive at reading stuff, though? Does it read discs you've burned before without errors? And is the lense clean and all that?

It might be that it's broken, I'm thinking, though there's too little to go by as of yet. All you can do is try and reinstall it and that kind of thing :dabs:

What you COULD do is dismantle the DVD drive and remove the laser from it, attach a small battery power source and go and melt peoples faces off instead. Believe me, it can be done. But if that isnt your cup of tea, you might want to try making sure the drive has the correct master/slave settings, is recognized by the bios correctly, can play already burnt discs and is recognized by windows.

If you get passed all of that, go to Device manager, and remove any and all disc drives. Uninstall their drivers and everything. Go ahead and reboot your machine. When it reboots, do not install the driver when the prompt comes up, go to HP's website and download their driver and install that.

If that doesnt work, seriously reconsider the melting peoples faces off.

ah... this is just stupid. I'm just gonna reformat this thing and see what happens.

I want to know where these people are getting their specialist CD/DVD drivers. I always seem to end up with the standard ones which are supplied with Windows and work on all drives.

About 2 years old, I really never burned much with it besides the odd DVD ISO's.

Its always the simplest and safest first attemp to fix a bad drive to uninstall its drivers from the Device Manager. And yes they are MS drivers, the common every day drivers MS uses for all drives but if they get corrupted an uninstall and reinstall will solve that problem. Firmware updates are very low on the list of fixes, about all they're good for is adding new media to the list of acceptable brands and changing to another type disk will test that theory much easier and safer.

Next take the guys advice and try the lens cleaner, you would be suprised how much dust can get into a drive by swapping disks day in and day out not to mention if your PC fans suck in air through all cracks and crevices. Use a can of compresses air first and with the tray open blow air in from both directions, then use your cleaning disk.

If that doesn't do it and you've checked your connections inside the pc, then the next thing is to uninstall and reinstall your software, especially Nero (it can affect alot of other things when its screwy). The Nero site has utilities to remove all traces of the old Nero and thats important especially with the Nero 7 crappy software that causes more problems than its worth. Get them all and run them all and ignore the fact that it doesn't recognize 7 is in a different folder than 6 just keep clicking ok and eventually it will run. Don't forget InCd, its a real bugger when it leaves traces behind. And when you reload Nero use the custom route and keep all the extra bloat out of there, who the heck wants Nero home or mobile or cover designer and all that crap. Keep it to a minimum, kust what you need.

One of the last things to try because of its low failure rate would be to change the connector to the motherboard, whether it be sata or more commonly ide. A bad Ide cable doesn't happen often but can be a bear to diagnose.

You wouldn't happen to be using a SPTD drive, would ya?

Comes with things like Daemon tools.

It messed up my burning capabilities once and I looked it up and they released a fix for it. All was well after.

What exactly is an SPTD drive?

Has to do with virtual drives...
