View Full Version : Xbox 360 or PS3?

Hi, I used to have an xbox, traded that in for a ps2 and now I'm thinking of buying either a XBox 360 Elite or PS3. Which one would you choose? It seems like all of my friends already pre-ordered Halo 3 so I'm leaning towards the 360.

ps3 is a graphic monster.
go for it.

Xbox 360 is more user friendly (IMO) for most people and a PS3 is more expensive but has everything that you need already (free internet service, wifi). It all comes down to games and that is something you should choose on your own.

Personally, I like my Xbox 360 more than a PS3 because of the games. I owned a PS2 for a year but I never played it. I just always liked Xbox games better. Right now, obviously, the Xbox 360 has a better selection.

As you might already know, with a PS3 you get a motion sensing controller but you sacrifice rumble and with the Xbox 360 it is the other way around.

well ps3 also has blu-ray so you can watch the movies on it insteed of buying a separate blu-ray player for $400

They say ps3 is a graphic monster, but yet alot of 360 games either plays better or looks better lolz. Infact, i'm pretty sure xbox360 is just as powerful as playstation 3. Maybe not in hardware specs, but in results, yes.

Buy xbox360, its cheap and there are a plenty of games to choose from, not alot , but good enough. PS3, doesn't have alot of games, and the fact that you have to dish out either 400 or 500 dollars is just silly.

u would basically buy an xbox for 1 game? that seems dumb. i'm more into pc than into console, but i'd lean toward the ps3 over the 360 if i were gonna get one of them. ps3 basically has ALL the games the 360 has minus the one game ur buying the system for. also, for the same price u can get the ps3 that plays next gen media. ie: bluray. lastly! u have dmc4, mgs4, ffxiii and more exclusive games for the ps3. pftt, ur just missing out in halo3. meh, go to ur friends house to play that.

So far even the recent PS3 games aren't all that from I hear.

Heavenly Sword is a rental.

Lair's control sucks ass.

So far the PS3 seems to be a polished turd and I just bought one.

I just bought a PS3 about a week ago, and I love it!

For 500 bucks, you get a frigging badass console. It plays games, blu-ray movies out of the box, and has a 60gb hard drive to mess around with. In the long run, it's even cheaper than the 360.

You buy the 360 for like 350 bucks, if you want high definition movies, add another 200, then add another 100 if you want wireless (which the PS3 has built in), then add 50 bucks a year if you want online play (PS3 = free), then add the little things like cost for batteries for the controllers (PS3 controller doesn't need any)... in order for the 360 to be just like the PS3... you end up paying more.

The PS3 lets you install other OS's, it upconverts regular DVDs and PS1/PS2 games to 1080p, you can hook up external HDD's and iPods to it, transfer music and movies to the HDD. Overall, it's pretty nice.

Only downside? No great games... yet. There are lots of good games coming out though, Strangehold, MGS4, Devil May Cry, Killzone 2, etc.

I dunno... I bought a new 40" 1080p Sony Bravia TV with a PS3 about a week ago, and I'm happy. =)

I like your post Rip The Jacker

On the day I bought my ps3, I bought a 42 inch Sharp Aquos LCDTV with 1080p, and I salivate watching it! Have you seen Planet Earth on bluray on a 1080p tv?? DAMN!! :D

I think Rainbow 6 is a great game, i play online but the experience building is slow going even though recently I've been doing really well in the games. Ghost Recon 2 is alright, Oblivion is not my thing, Motorstorm is cool, Resistance was fun, and DiRT is releasing tomorrow and that game is friggin' nuts!

I still think the game selection is better than the wii, I only have Zelda and I beat that a while ago. I have rented games, bought and returned games, and played games at other friends' houses, but until Mario comes out, my wii is only going to get another layer of dust.

I'm not an xbox guy; I've played it at two different friends' houses, but we all always end up switching to either gamecube or ps2 (I only have one close friend with a ps3 and we always play it, and I know a couple people with wii's but it's like taking candy from babies when you play against them).

had my PS3 for almost a year now and stil love it its getting better and better

The big reason why it is better then the 360 for me is REGION FREE!!

that means I am able to play NCAA football for the first time in my life im able to play Jap games Im able to play any NTSC game!! something the 360 doesn't have their ignorant towards euro and Aussie gamers

also I can buy games from someone on EBay from the US for half the price $50 Aussie rather then $120 Aust and get them 2 months before relase! (note Madden 08 for example)

I've always said that feature-wise, the PS3 is a better buy.

However, it's a game system at heart and on that note, it sucks.

Most of us wouldn't want it if it's not going to play games.

The Blu-Ray player is not that much of a plus until prices for the movies comes down. The main allure for me was getting the PS3 for $350 plus 5 free movies. I still don't see how people bought it to keep for $600. Hell since I bought the system at a Sony store with a Sony Visa, I almost have enough points to get a free game through Sony Rewards....weird.

Damn I didn't know the PS3 wireless controller didn't require batteries. It's probably because it doesn't have rumble. Then again, where does it get it's power?

Btw, Stranglehold isn't that great and it's also on the 360. Devil May Cry 4 will also be on the 360.

I never bought the wireless adapter for the 360 ($100? fuck no). I say hardwire your ethernet connection if you can. I only use wireless for things that don't have a fixed position.

Sony's online sucks compared to XBL. However, I see it's getting better and better. PSN users have XBL to thank. Competition is what's making PSN better. PSN is free because of the strength of XBL. I can see XBL coming down in price or becoming free.

I still haven't hooked-up my PS3 yet. I did take it outta the box and put in my entertainment cabinet. It's rather heavy. I'll have to turn it on before I go outta town next week.

It seems that the biggest argument here is cost. I don't like the game selection with xbox, and the ps3's although lacking is starting to pick up. I would never pay to play online, so xbox is out of the question - what bugged me about playing it at a a friend of a friend's place was that the games were dominated by prepubescent boys who needed to be the centre of attention.

Go to EB or some other store and play both and make your own decision

Look at the upcoming games on both systems and see which ones appeal to you most. It's all about the games.

I went for 360 mainly because of Gears, PGR, Halo and GTA4 (I know it's on PS3). And now I get to play Ninja Gaiden 2! :)

I do believe that the PS3, unfortunately, will be the future because of the superior size of Blue Ray. Too bad Xbox 360 only uses DVD-9. This is coming from a 360 fanboy, too.

PS3 is + complete, but for price is xbox 360 XDI disagree. If you are after features like wifi and a hdd, then the PS3 is cheaper.

i have neither but am leaning towards buying a 360, because as i understand it:

1) people who have both generally think the 360 is currently better mainly because of better games, lots of people are saying that the ps3 will probably catch up, but to me a bird in the hand...
2) Graphics on each are much of a muchness for whatever reasons
3) the whole hd-dvd vs bluray thing is still up in the air (and imo they might both bite the dust by being replaced by future storage options or a move to a radically different viewing technology so i'm not planning on redoing my movie collection for several years)
4) my console is going to sit approx 1 foot away from my broadband router so wifi is meaningless to me

I've got PS3 and XBOX360, My 360 is getting used every day, But thats because i can play copies on it and there's alot more games out, What i can say for the PS3 is you get what you pay for, It is a quality built system, Silent drive and silent cooling, Blu ray player, Free live, Rechargable wireless controller no batteries needed, You can install your own OS and lots of other little bits and bobs, Even when here in th UK the system was £425 it was still worth the money hardware wise.

I'm thinking of getting one of the systems for my boys for Xmas , does the PS3 play the old Play station games ? We have quite a collection of PS games and did n't really care for the XBOX other than Halo .

One of my buddies said he beat Halo 3 in under 12 hours and he sucks at games so still wondering what to do . Was reading about Mass Effect and the sweaty lesbian encounter but not worried as their both older ...... the boys I mean . The price seems kinda high for the Xbox games too over $68.00 cnd .

Also, I reccommend using PayPal to buy a PS3, as you will get $50 in cash back on January 31 if you purchase by December 10th (offer only good at select PayPal stores). Also, your games should come down in price in Canada because your dollar is now worth as much as a U.S. dollar.

If you're going to get a ps3 for that reason, be sure to pick up either the 20 gig or 60 gig model, as the newer models have switched from hardware emulation to software.

Also, if there's a specific game you intend on playing, it's probably a good idea to double check it runs well here:

The Ps3 has better graphics potential but takes more time from developers to 'tap' into that power. The Xbox 360 is easier to develop for which is why many games look better and PS3 games take so long to be released. GTA was prolonged just because the PS3 takes so long to develop.

They both have their pluses and minuses (are those words??) But if you were to buy all the accessories that come with the PS3 for the 360 you wind up paying alot more. How do I know?? I had to buy the HD-DVD drive the Wifi adapter even had to purchase the dang chargers and batteries. The multi-media slots come in handy also for movies playing and I like the HD playback options as x264 looks alot better than XVID.

PS3 60gb model: $500 (no need to buy anything else)
360 Elite: $500
Add HD-DVD: $179
Add Wifi: $75
Add batteries and recharge kit: $30
Total for 360 now:$784

Suddenly the PS3 ain't so pricey and the hardware backwards compatibity on the 60gb PS3 kicks the heck out of the crappy software emulation of the 360 hands down.

Suddenly the PS3 ain't so pricey and the hardware backwards compatibity on the 60gb PS3 kicks the heck out of the crappy software emulation of the 360 hands down.More accurate pricing...

Complete PS3 Experience
PS3 80 GB (1 free game): $500
total: $500

Complete Xbox 360 Experience
Xbox 360 Elite 120 GB(2 free games): $450
Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter: $95
Xbox 360 HD-DVD (remote control and King Kong): $160
Quick Charge Kit: $25
total: $730 (Elite), $630 (Pro), $560 (Arcade)

The Xbox comes in three flavors:
Xbox 360 Arcade (no hdd, included arcade games): $280
Xbox 360 Pro (20 GB, 2 included Xbox 360 games): $350
Xbox 360 Elite (120 GB, 2 included Xbox 360 games): $450

The 20 GB and 60 GB PS3's are discontinued and replaced by the 40 GB and 80 GB PS3's.

These are Amazon.com prices, btw.

Agreed. I would love an Xbox 360 for christmas but know it won't happen. I Stated earlier that i would pick Xbox 360 and still stand by that assumption.:D

I Stated earlier that i would pick Xbox 360 and still stand by that assumption.:DNot true, although the Xbox 360 has a better video card, the PS3 has the edge. Both systems have about 512MB of memory dedicated to the system and graphics. The huge edge that the PS3 has over the Xbox 360 is the Cell Processor. It has 8 PPEs, and dedicates one for the XMB. They say the PS3's cell is an advantage like the SNES's Mode 7, which is true but they have to take advantage of that extra 'power'. Last year, many game developers would make the game on the 360 and port it to the PS3 which made it look worse. The makers or GTA IV say that it is smarter to code for the PS3 and then the Xbox 360 because the PS3 is the harder console to develop for. Look at Call of Duty 4 HD Video Comparison at Gametrailers.com and you will see that there is no difference between Xbox 360 and PS3. It will only get better as developers get more familiar with PS3 hardware and be able to take advantage of the Cell.

Come back next year and I guarantee you won't be saying the same thing.

I would go with the 360 because it has many more games available for it. Also just about every game released for both systems performs/looks better on 360. The online service is also better than ps3.
