ok if u wanna play video with external subtitles(srt, sub, idx)
Install VobSub (google it )

then rename the subtitle file to the same name as the video file but with the extension .srt(or.sub). Example:
no_mans_land.avi
no_mans_land.srt ..( both these file should be in the same folder )

Play the AVI with your favorite software video player and the subtitles should appear. You should also see a green arrow in the system tray ... ;)

another easier method by using vlc player
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

to open a subtitles file, use the Advanced Open dialog box (Menu File, Open file). Select your file by clicking on the Browse button. Then, check the subtitle options checkbox and click on the Settings button.Select a subtitles file ..You can then select the subtitles file by clicking the Browse button..

:)

Excellent little guide :)..
And if the subtitles dont sync with the movie, you could try getting a other one here:
www.opensubtitles.org (http://www.opensubtitles.org)
www.subscene.com (http://www.subscene.com)

syncing them yourself is a bit harder but ask if you want a little guide on how to do it. :)

use virtualdub, the only two thing are (1) you need to convert the *.srt files into *.ssa files and (2) you need to download a plugin for virtualdub, available on the main webpage.

Download links:
http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/

Subtitler plugin:
http://www.virtualdub.org/downloads/subtitler-2_4.zip

SRT to SSA Sub Converter:
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/srt2ssa.html

I haven't tried this guide myself, but it looks like it's fairly easy. (The program in the guide is using virtualdub too I think)
http://beans.seartipy.com/2007/05/20/step-3a-merginghardcoding-subtitles-with-avidivxxvid-files-using-avirecomp/

Start where its says: Merging Subtitles with AVI Files Using AviRecomp
Hope this helps you:)
