Your PC lives longer if you do not shut it down much..its better to keep it online 24/7 unless there is a an rain storm or tornadoes or something...shutting down and restarting shortens its live...and the reason you get better sources at night is because if u live here in america..lets say itds 11 pm....well in places like england they are awake to because its probably like 7 am so thats the time that the most people are on Kazaa.

lol twister. i left my pc for 48 hrs straight and everything slow down. not d/l but programs. like it take forever to load sometin after it been on for more than 24hrs. and if i burn a vcd, the vcd will freeze during playback and then resume then freeze at a regular interval. but if its off for the ngiht everthing including the vcd is fine. should i get better cooling or what.

do u have a liquid cooler cause that is the best thing that could keep u running and sometimes or all the time run faster since its all "COLD"

u should leave your pc on all the time because of thermal damage thats done to the eletronics as they heat up as long as you got good fan and clean off any dust once in while leaving your pc on will make it last longer.
u can put your pc in a low power mode by using the power options in your control panel

It depenends on your os

98 should be restarted every so often
xp can be left on but mine start to slow down after a while
try win server 2003. that should work for a long time

can you play games on winserver?

If i remember well theres tons of hardware it doesn't have drivers for and playing most games is fairly unlikely.

technicly there is no reason to restart a PC at all (I've had machines that have been on 5years+ with out a powerdown/restart)
The only thing that forces restarts is the OS due to it's instability

ilw

To exceed more than about a couple of weeks of uptime (normal usage) on a computer u need error correcting ram (much more expensive) otherwise even if the os is perfect a fault in ram will crash it. Suns and other unix machines which are left on permanently all have ECC ram.

I agree with [B][O][T] . Even linux and unix machines generaly don't stay up that long.
And especially not in a desktop environment. And, I find it hard to believe, in that 5 years, there's never been a power outage of more than 20 minutes which is what a UPS would give you( and they weren't that good 5 years ago)

Average uptime Windows 95 4 mins 14 seconds  that takes me back.

personally i tuen it off every nite. i left it on once for a week and it just started to freeze, i turned it off for a day or so and it worked again, they get overheated. let them rest for a while and they will be more reliable

Longest I have left mine on was for around 2 or so months.

There are NO POWEROUTAGES IN GERMANY, thunder can be going all over etc, no power outages whatsoever...

Hamburg btw havent had a poweroutage in the few years ive lived here

last time I shut my pc down was a week ago, roughly. I do not count restarts as shutting down, as the pc still using power.

aside from the hard drive and the fans, there aren't really a lot of moving parts in a PC. the fans are supposed to last for several thousand hours of use, and the CPU and RAM can basically be used forever without a break as long as they don't overheat.

the one thing i would be concerned about is the hard drive. server grade hard drives are designed for 24/7 - 365 use, but consumer level hard drives are not. not to say that you can't leave them on 24 hours/day, but there is a chance that leaving it on all the time might damage the hard drive. there was a big controversy about a year ago, when IBM declared that one of their hard drive series should only be used for 8 hours per day, because they were getting so many returned due to mechanical failure.

Yes, but didn't they suffer massive embarrasment as a result? I still see where people joke about IBM drives and recall that f**kup.

Me brother has left his on for months at a time, once he left it on for so long that he didnt realise how hot it had got, so hot infact that when he turned it off the motherboard went "BANG" and cracked down the middle from the heat change :|

nothing much he could have done, but it was a top spec pc as well......

Ok - so it was a NetWare 3 server sat on a very nice UPS (21KVa IIRC)- but it WAS up for 5 years and 1 day before the disk failed lol

well, of course. because claiming that you should only use it for 8 hours per day is extremely conservative, and it was actually just skirting the real issue of the HDs being defective. people pushing the HDs hard through 24/7 usage was just making the defect surface quicker, imho.

I don't ever shut down my computer.

People say its better for the computer, but thats not the reason i do it.

I just don't have patience to wait for it to boot.

Takes too long to boot and shut down
Yes i know what you are thinking, press the button and come back after 30 seconds. NO NO

I can't wait. I HATE WAITING

So my computer is on 24/7 unless windows ask for restart after i install something or do a windows update

I usually leave mine on 24/7, unless there's some pressing emergency. It's a laptop, which changes things a bit, but its such a hunk of junk that nothing I do to it will make it any worst than it already is. I'm hoping for the day my motherboard splits down the middle :) It would be the second motherboard to go, ... (Long story)

I was with you 100% until you said it was a Netware 3 server.

I've seen plenty of unix based servers that have been up for over three years and some that have been up over four, but I've never seen a netware server that has survived more than a few months without a reboot (unless of course it is so useless that it is doing nothing), but that's what you get with a hobbyist's network.
