View Full Version : I was shouted at this morning

Skweeky

...because I was driving the new car and kept missing 3rd gear, putting it back into 1st instead:cry:

I think this was terribly unfair, as I've not even passed my driving test yet ( I've got my theory test tomorrow though, wish me luck)

Luckily I found out today that I perfectly capable of parallel parking, despite never actually having done it before:D

Drivers get stressed easily, expect more shouting, just put some tunes on and ignore em :)

What sort of car is it? Most decent cars have something clever in the gearbox to stop that from happening :pinch:

and how many times did you lose the gear to achieve that :hooray:

True that. You always have to assume that is the case.

No, he shouted ' Pull over, you're pushing it to the left!'

He's been teaching me for the past few months and we've been ok.
I think the grinding sound of the gearbox of a new car was too much for him to take

Mr JP Fugley
10-12-2007, 05:55 PM
Ah, he's talking pish.

You push a car to the right, you pull it to the left. The opposite is true in the USA and mainland Europe

Skweeky
10-12-2007, 06:01 PM
He meant the gearstick
I was pushing the gearstick to the left.

I was, at that point, convinced that I wasn't
Until I looked down and had to admit he was right... for once....

Mr JP Fugley
10-12-2007, 06:08 PM
You need to learn to hold your hand properly and that won't happen.

For 1st and 2nd hold the gearstick with your left thumb at the bottom and pinky at the top. Then push away from you.

For the other gears the thumb should be at the top and the pinky at the bottom. For 3rd and 4th simply push forward or pull back. For 5th pull towards you and forward.

It's very natural if you hold your hand the right way.

Does that make sence.

American driving doesn't count
You're only allowed to go as fast as 50mph, ergo, you'd never go above 3rd gear :P

Anyway,

had my theory test yesterday morning and passed with...

50/50!!!!

I got a 100% correct!!

@JP: That pinky thumb thing makes sense. I've got it figured out now though. Just wasn't used to having a fairly new gearbox, as opposed to one that is about to fall to bits

Sextent
10-14-2007, 12:19 PM
It's set to work that way, with springs and witchcraft.

If you put it into neutral, from any gear, it will naturally fall between third and fourth.

Congrats on the theory btw. Way to go you.

I mean the "click when you see a potential hazard and then again if it becomes a hazard" thing.

It didn't work properly, it only seemed to count "potential hazards" as things right infront of the camera, like it didn't count a truck with it's hazard lights on down the road as a hazard even tho' it clearly was.

Skweeky
10-14-2007, 12:51 PM
Yeah, you're still supposed to do that

It's dubious, because it acknowledges your click, but you don't know what it is acknowledging; the pedestrian on the pavement of the car parked on the road in the distance.
Got 68 out of 75 on that bit.

what about a kid in the road on a bike? that was classed as a potential hazard even tho' it was obviously a hazard/

Skweeky

The way it was explained on the intro video was ;

'Click when you see a potential hazard and click again when the situation changes'

So you'd have to click for a cyclist on the road, and click again if he looks over his shoulder to change direction.

I still think the fact that you can't see out any window other than the windscreen and that you can't see your mirrors is a hazard, like
(the footage you see on the test is like you're watching from on the dashboard)

Vehicle safety questions

These are basic safety checks that a driver should carry out to ensure the vehicle is safe for use. Although some checks may involve the candidate in opening the bonnet to identify where fluid levels would be checked, pupils will not be asked to touch a hot engine or physically check fluid levels.

As vehicle technology advances, more and more vehicles are being equipped with electronic diagnostic systems, which inform the driver of the state of the engine fluid levels and tyre pressures. It will be acceptable for a candidate to refer to the vehicle information system (if fitted) when answering questions on fluid levels or tyre pressures.

You can find source material in the DSA publication 'The official guide to Driving - the essential skills' and 'The official DSA guide to learning to drive'. Advice and information on how to carry out vehicle safety checks can also be found in the manufacturer's handbook.

Candidates will be asked two questions, one 'show me' and one 'tell me'. One or both questions answered incorrectly will result in one driving fault being recorded.

Doesn't that pretty much make that whole part pointless?
