Why do some prefer x264 over xvid? I've been looking for like a versus chart with no luck. If x264 is so much better then why is dvix the scene standard?

Some like to watch quality release instead of xvid shite.

For example:

Weeds S03E14 HR HDTV XviD-aAF vs. Weeds S03E14 720p HDTV x264-SiTV

The first one is displayed at 624x352, while the x264 is shown at 1280x720.

Both claimed to be "HD", but when putting the first version on full screen mode, the quality is shit. It's like trying to enlarge an image to twice it's normal size. The effect of the image quality going to shit when enlarging is called "destructive scaling", and the same thing happens with videos.

I have a good 19" LCD and like to watch my shows in true HD on the entire screen, not a tiny window. Seeing as my resolution is set to 1280x1024, the show is displayed at its standard, true resolution while still in full screen mode.

The difference is obvious.

Ofcourse x264. I still download my shows in xvid because it's smaller and faster.
I watch 720p and see the difference on my 15,4" laptop screen. I don't see how you couldn't see the difference.

XviD has more support, but I prefer the higher quality of h264. It might be larger filesize but it sure looks way better

Just to clear something up here, h264 is a more efficient codec than XviD/DivX. It qualitatively looks better than xvid at the same resolution and lower bitrates. Ergo, the file size would be smaller than that of the xvid if the two were at the same resolution.

I don't prefer xvid but it's the standard for me. I really like x264 but the releases are quite scarce, so I tend to download the odd one

well, for series like lost, i think xvid is the best choice as it is smaller in size, but it is the truth that x264 is the true hd format, xvid doesn't claim to be hd.also, x264 requires more system resources and is huge in size...
