Does anyone know if you can use Windows Media Player 9 to get the songs off the CD's or does it make them to big of files?

Yep. The Chris Myden formula is the only way to go (for me). And EAC will tag em for you
if you press Ctrl+G and download the CD Info from freedb.

windows media player will rip them into windows media files, which are lower quaility than people like - and just don't look right (that and Tag&Rename don't like em)

EAC & Lame seems to be the favored way of ripping, I use Easy CD-DA Extractor & Lame - just because :P

EAC is cool when it succesfully rips my cd's,
somtimes it wont read them, especially my old and used cd's.
If EAC fails, I'll use Audiograbber, or Steinberg's WaveLab 4c,
fact is, all those apps uses the Lame encoder. :)

We got all the needed apps for share in SS (http://www.klboard.ath.cx/bb/index.php?showtopic=45353) too.
I have made a off-line version of Pauls pinned topic (http://www.klboard.ath.cx/bb/index.php?showtopic=22763) and
also added more info in it. It is HTML format, with dark background, easier for
my old, bleeding 4-eyes... ;)

Read the pinned topic and join us. :)

[edit:about wma]

ps. do not use, make, share or otherwise get involved with wma-files !
cuz they suck big time. Rumours go around that .wma files may
contain malicious scripts etc... Also, do not Tag or organise your
albums with Kazaa, thats pretty sucky too, only fix the fake names if any.
Tag and Rename + OrangeCD or similar app is better for organizing.

Though it's $30, the Skip Dr. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005B9W6/qid=1058005233/br=1-8/ref=br_lf_e_8//103-8657848-1303813?v=glance&s=electronics&n=173243) is completely worth it. I've never had a
disc that it couldn't fix. It will completely resurface it. It may take two or three passes to do it,
but as long as the CD doesn't have any label-side damage, and isn't cracked, it can do the job.

I'd also say Easy CD-DA Extractor 6.0.0.

It lets you rip tracks at 320Kbps CBR

That was my favorite (Easy CD-DA Extractor) till I found EAC.
But really, there's not much point in encoding at 320 CBR. You might as well leave it as a .wav.....it's still
gonna be a fecking huge (10MB) file.

Not true. My WAVEs used to be around 50-60MB and a few songs would end up consuming around 250-500MB of HDD space. Perhaps I ought to get a 20GB HDD just for music.

I'll settle anything at 192kb and over, as long as they are Full Albums :D

320kb is a bit big, but i'll take those over 128kb.

Gotta look for the Dr.Skip and Easy CD-DA Extractor, thanks for the tips.

I've been using Cdex for quite a while now and haven't had any trouble. It does a good job and is also fairly easy to use.
