I think Les and JP could really do some good here: http://www.freerice.com/index.php

FreeRice has a custom database containing thousands of words at varying degrees of difficulty. There are words appropriate for people just learning English and words that will challenge the most scholarly professors. In between are thousands of words for students, business people, homemakers, doctors, truck drivers, retired people… everyone!

FreeRice automatically adjusts to your level of vocabulary. It starts by giving you words at different levels of difficulty and then, based on how you do, assigns you an approximate starting level. You then determine a more exact level for yourself as you play. When you get a word wrong, you go to an easier level. When you get three words in a row right, you go to a harder level. This one-to-three ratio is best for keeping you at the “outer fringe” of your vocabulary, where learning can take place.

There are 50 levels in all, but it is rare for people to get above level 48.

I'm hovering at around 31, but it's great fun and seems genuine :D

Still can't get past 45 but I have donated 1110 grains of rice. Some of those words are obscure. I know many but would never use them on a day to day basis.

I'll probly have a look at that again, it seems like a good idea.

Correct. Educated guesses would be more punctilious (whatever that means).

After the umpteenth attempt at 45 I got two right and cheated to go to 46 - 46 was a piece of cake  but I think they are making words up by the time you get to 47

Sans cheating I would say 44 was my comfortable limit. 1710 grains of rice now. A meal for someone.

a town in Switzerland was not an option. The answer was alfalfa

I thought a bottle of chianti was essential with those.

670 grains of rice

Never heard of "clochard".

Lots of (semi) educated guesses to get that far...caught a few uniquely Shakespearean words along the way.

While interesting at first, I quickly realized how little of an impact my question-answering was making.

29,000 grains in a pound means 1,812.5 grains per ounce which means 182 correct questions per ounce of rice. Assuming you can answer these questions correctly at a rate of one question for every two seconds, this means that you would spend 364 seconds, or just over 6 minutes, answering questions. Given that I can buy a box of rice for less than $5 at the local supermarket, I think it would be a better deal for me to just write a check for $5 to the United Nations World Food Program (where the "free riceHOW MANY GRAINS OF RICE IN A POUND? Stingy ass mothers. Don't see how this could help much.

According to Producer's Rice Mills, (http://www.producersrice.com/rice/facts.html (http://www.producersrice.com/rice/facts.html)), there are over 29,000 grains in a pound of long grain white rice.

You'd have slightly fewer for long grain brown, as each grain retains its bran layer. Short grain rice is 3-4 times shorter, so you'd have 3-4 times as many in a pound

dinsdale

But what is more likely? You play the game some more, or you donate money? Your vocabulary also improves, and the game is fun. As yesterdays total was 212,660,970 grains, that equates to roughly 1,800 pounds of rice, assuming you get four times as many per pound. That is not bad for a daily sum generated by an online flash game. It will also attract revenue from people who would not think of donating to charity.

So there.

No....you didn't... kthxbai. :snooty:

I checked the site/blog that, I think, originated the claim (the one that it is true, anyways, there's a bunch of them without real proof).

Turns out some guy decided it was a scam, and set out to prove it, ultimately having people use a bunch of clicking macros to donate the rice.

As evidence he cites numbers of successful clicks as given through browsers running macros, and then compares it to the amount of rice reported given by the site at the end of the month, or somesuch.

So he's cheating the site to prove it, and telling everyone the site is the scam.

He also claims that the owner of the site pockets the supposed revenues that didn't go into rice, although this can't proven.

He even has the WFP (World Food programme) commenting on his site/blog, saying they would very much like him to stop.

I wouldn't be entirely surprised if it's more to do with a database issue, and that the number of simultaneous commands issued by the bots fuck up the amount of clicks submitted to the database.

At any rate that wee mythbuster there sounds like a massive cunt.
