MY recommendation for cheap boards is not to get them. They ultimately cause problems and you'll regret it when you want to use FireWire or Serial ATA or whatever in the future.

dont worry, firewire and sata aint any problems, its more of a second system, nothing major really. i mostly use my laptop, its my dad, bro and sister that use that computer.

What I'm saying is that you'll want a good mobo now to save yourslef from having to change it in the future. A good mobo now will last for years and years, but chepa ones may need upgraded much sooner.

right, i'd prefer build in sound, and budget of around £50, i have a vodoo 3 2000 pci i could put in, then i get a graphics card later.

any you would recomend then?

edit: i've had my current board for over 4 years, its a pcchips.
i had an amd k6-2 350, then got a 500 about 2 years ago, as this was the most the board will take.

What about this one (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=385&MODEL=MS-6712) (the one with lan integrated) from dabs for £47.50 looks good

Asus A7V8X-X (http://www.asus.com/products/mb/socketa/a7v8x-x/overview.htm#) (Socket A) Motherboard (MB-022-AS) £48 from overclockers.co.uk looks very nice, but it doesn't have audio jacks out, it only has spdif in/out :(

ok here guys, i'll help u out a bit......DON'T get built-in anthng!!!! it uses the system bus, which slows EVERYTHING down..and onboard chips have been known to fail more often than dedicated cards.....
get a mobo with ATA133 at least.....make sure it doesnt come with any built-in things except for USB, PS/2, serial, standard shit etc etc....

then, if u need firewire, get an IEEE 1394 card...they're fairly good priced at the moment....

get a separate soundcard, w/e tickles your fancy....

and of course Network cards arent more than $20 max these days.... :)

this is more of a budget upgrade so i dont want to be spending to much.
i quite fancy the Asus A7V8X-X as mentioned by ilw and its go a 5/5 rating on ebuyer and £48 is a good price.

edit: also my current board is over 4 years old and the integrated sound is still working fine

i forgot about delivery sorry, so ebuyer is probably the cheapest place i think its £51

delivery aint gonna make much difference as i will be getting ram and cpu and cooler aswell, so both will be about the same, so its either dabs or ebuyer. i'll research into cheapest for all parts when im totally ready to buy.

also on another note, is it better to buy an oem processor or retail.
with the retail you get a 3 year warranty and cpu cooler, but is it worth the extra or am i better buyin oem and getting a seperate cooler.

it will be about an athlon xp, at least 2000

I personally would go OEM and get the cooler separate cos its usually a fair bit cheaper and I haven't had much trouble with parts breaking while in normal use (they're usually either broken when they arrive and so easily returnable or they break after ages by which time they probably need upgrading).

i think im gonna go with the asus A7N8X-X, the fsb runs at 400mhz, but would it work if i put and athlon xp2200 with 266 fsb, also pc2700 ram aswell.

Yes.

And that is one of the best boards to go for. Go for an nForce2-based board like that one.
