Its been years since I have done this stuff, back when napster was around. I was looking for advice on a good cd burner that doesnt cost alot. I think theres CD/DVD burners all in one but cost more right? Or can I burn DVD's with any CD burner?

Thanks

I have a Lite-On 52/24/52 speed burner
cost me about £43 sterling ($70 or so) and i've had no problems with it at all

it's pretty quick too, as this picture (http://mysite.freeserve.com/MSchumiFTP/burn.JPG) demonstrates

dvd burners do cost considerably more, however, most of them will burn normal cd's too (might be all of them, but not sure).

afaik, there's no way to burn a dvd with a standard cd burner

Nope. To burn onto a blank DVD disc, you'll need a DVD burner.

depends what your burning because if you were going to burn a file that is 600MB it will finish faster than if you were going to burn 600MB worth of 2MB files.

I notice that with my sony 24x10x40. Its a really good burner and i think its fast enough. I believe the faster the burner the faster it wears out.

I have the same speed, but mine's manufactured by Packard Bell. There was a problem with the ATAPI drivers at one time, but I fixed that, so it's fine, but the max I can burn is at 3.6MB/s which is quite slow when burning a full 700MB CD.

I've been running a LiteOn 32x12x40 for the last year or so .. Been pretty happy with it. With the right software, it'll burn just about anything to CD. :)

Pretty much all DVD burners I've seen will also burn CD-R/RW, though usually not as fast as a 'normal' CD-RW drive.

I have a Samsung 40X12X40 w/ 8 mb buffer.

It's fast and I've never encountered any errors after burning. ;)

Try disccity (http://www.disccity.co.uk) in Uk for reliable discs (cd & dvd).

£5 delivery so it bumps the price up if you are only buying one lot, but if you can get together with some friends you can save quite a lot.

Cd burner 24x10x40 Mirai (rebadged Sanyo), great because it will burn over 90 mins (with the right media).

Dvd - Sony DW-U10A. Superb for DVD, but won't burn cd's more than 80 mins.

I have a PLEXTOR, and every copy of a CDROM that I have made works perfect when I use it as the SOURCE and the Destination. Even those CDs that "require original CD". No "no-CD" hack required.

I use CloneCD.

I have a plextor as well, and it works fine. I wonder though, I've seen DVD players sold at Ebay for about fifty bucks. Say you by accident removed the laser and the chips and bits, and then by accident slapped it into a CD RW burner, would you buy accident have made a DVD burner?

B/c the only difference I can see between 30 dollar CD RW burners and 300 dollar DVD burners is in the lazer.
