7zip will give better compression when packing files. It is compatible with RARs - and is free. WinRAR is (imo) very user friendly though.

I like winrar as well , my only problem is the dummies packing the files . Be nice in a perfect world to have a standard for say movie format .

Is ther some rpofessional sw or method for great compression?
I had an iso file for the game matrix path of neo, zipped size about 250kb and unzipped size over 3.5gigs.

Winrar and winzip are both professional pieces of software. It is impossible to keep compressing something without losing some of the original data, otherwise all compressed files would be 1 byte in length.

If you had a 3.5GB .iso zipped down to 250kb (or even as I suspect 250MB) then it must have had a LOT of repeated data. If that's the case then either the .iso was poorly ripped or it would suggest the game creators wanted to bump up the size to make you think you were getting more than you really were.

there are some more powerfull compression methods but they are not usable for everyday work as they are way too slow.

there is no way 3gb of data can be compressed to 250k. there were some files floating around packed like this with special compressors but they were all damaged altho they would show as being uncompressed properly.

This iso is not installable, you have to mount it to play. The original setup is different and is not compressed. But I dont have the setup files.

One thing i have noticed i used to be able to rar photos with winrar and compress them to an 8th of the original size the more recent versions don't have this abbility Does anyone know why? or which version i should go back to be able to do this again ?

exactly what i was talking about. it's nothing but a big corrupted image file. you can't play that :)

winrar had multimedia option in older versions, now it should auto recognize file types. you can't compress compressed images (jpg) that much tho, i bet you compressed bmp or raw straight from your camera.

I use winrar. 7zip WILL give better compression, but it takes much longer to compress and extract than rar archives. imo it's not worth it.

Me personally i use Winrar nothing better in my opinion. Also Power Archiver and 7zip are good as well.

I use winrar for all of my archiving and most of my unpacking needs. Occasionally I will need to use universal extractor, but that's about it.
