View Full Version : Do you Hit n' Run on public trackers

lilpiggie

After reading various threads about how much people seed or don't seed I though it could be fun to know if people Hit n' Run or if they stay to seed when they grab something from a public tracker.

So what do you do outside the private trackers, and why? And when you're at it what would you download from the public trackers, if anything?

i never use Public sites..

The upload speed is usually maxed out and the download speed is about 5kB/s if its even downloading at all. :pinch:

I sometimes use public torrent sites, i try to upload about 1:1 always i use it.

lilpiggie
11-20-2007, 11:58 PM
Well I think that it matters in some way, because if no one seeds on the public trackers the torrents will die very quick! Personally I download many linux distros, and stay to seed thinking if everybody hit and runs nobody else is going to get it at a decent speed or even get it at all.

Sometimes I use public trackers on very rare files now that Demonoid is down. I seed for the courtesy of the other people who are leeching the same file as me. As I know it's rare to find.

pandabear
11-21-2007, 12:09 AM
^ what he said. Anything thats rare, i will grab off publics, and just seed since it usually only has 1 seeder or something. tho i usually hit 1:1 (that is i have uploaded total torrent size) before the torrent finishes

Polarbear

i don't use public tracker, but if i did i would seed back 1:1.

depend on which public site, but mostly I hit & run on public tracker
download some anime & tv shows that you can't find on scene release

in public trackers my up>dl usually
so it's easy to get 1:1 on files :)

i'm not using them anymore, no need to

but i remember seeding back to 100% because of the poor d/l speed

yes.. actually yes.. when i was on my first tracker... but i done that because nobody teach me with bittorent.. how to use,, whats the rules... and from there i improve my english too
but now.. NO HITS&RUN... NEVER

11-21-2007, 01:28 AM
I'll admit it and say I used to hit & run back when I was a noob. Now I am a little bit more knowledgeable and use all private sites.

Reason for the hit & run was because the longer you stay on a public site the better the chance of getting an infringement letter sent.

No i dont hit and run that's not file shareing now is it ? reguardless of whatever site you use if you wanted to download something and everyone hit and run all over public places there would be nothing to download i download share remove and let the next person do what i did

lukee

back when i used Torrentspy I used to hit and run without knowing it, cause I didn't know what a ratio was lol. :P

11-21-2007, 02:06 AM
Same here... When i used Bittorrent for the first time I always hit and run in public trackers, I do not know about ratio that time.... But now i do not use public tracker anymore and i always seed 1.1 or 36 hours in all my trackers......:)

fsephie
11-21-2007, 02:24 AM
Never. generally I'll try and seed as long as is bloody freaking possible just because I want to make sure people get what they want at a decent rate. I figure someone has to be noble and benevolent otherwise everyone would just be shafted.

i once tried a torrent on demonoid, using my crap seedbox
i got a ratio of 200-300 in one or two days.

that file was very popular, i cant remember what it was, but i new i was a bit generous.

occassionally, but usually the uploads are far greater then downloads like someone stated before

ACTUALLY, im quite a private tracker person myself, BUT BEFORE WAFFLES AND WHAT, and after Oink, bt junkie showed me a little light, for albums. You cna DL albums fairly quickly and their decent quality. I was getting 400kbps on most.

There is no 'hit' and 'run' in public trackers IMO. I mean, noone can unless he caps his upload. Whenever i grab something from a public tracker, i get the complete file only when i seed atleast 3 times the download. When i grabbed 'history boys DVDR-Diamond', my upload was around 17 Gb when i just finished grabbing it.

I never cap my upload in any tracker, even public, but i will stop the torrent immediately when d/L is complete in any tracker if there are more seeders than leechers except for those having those strict seeding rules.

11-21-2007, 04:50 AM
i never hit and run on tracker be it public or private and we need to seed more demonoid and public becz on private trackers every body seed but on public very less people seed so its more important to seed on public trackers.

tusks
11-21-2007, 08:08 AM
Only when I was a complete noob and on Demonoid rarely where for some reason my ratio was fixed at a constant 1.33

These days, I usually seed to 1.5 - 2 on public and 2 - 3.5 on private

but you use demonoid (a public tracker)

i only snatch windows apps from them, but sometimes hit n run. i seem to be using them more since oink got taken down, as that was my main source for apps :(

jesper12345
11-21-2007, 11:00 AM
nope... I maintain a positive ratio on public trackers too. Especially the small torrents. I mean if the torrent is just a couple of MBs big you might as well stick around and seed it.

kartook
11-21-2007, 03:54 PM
i like to share lot in small torrents sites like textbooktorretns

my ration is nearly

Downloaded 2.09 MiB
uploaded 3.87 GiB
Ratio 1,892.61

in public torretn i was lost my hole data CBT
i got one good pack

total size 25.5GB

downloaded 25.5 GB
and uploaded 50.59 GB

the same tracker i tried few others i got VIRUS

my anti virus application simply catch so i stopped
now i am looking for good private tracker for application download :)

I try to atleast seed it to a 1:1 ratio, been a really long time since I have used a public tracker though.

Daniel
11-21-2007, 04:25 PM
With a couple of private trackers, good request sections and on top of that Usenet access, I don't need a public tracker and have in fact not used one for a long time. Back then I had acceptable ratios however as it was the only fair thing to do.

fook3d
11-21-2007, 04:35 PM
I will use a public tracker for music i cant find anywhere else only.

And as someone already stated, You will be downloading at about 5-10kb and uploading about 10 times that, So by the time you have downloaded it, You have already achieved a ratio of 1+

redMonster
11-21-2007, 05:07 PM
Yes, I do hit and run on public trackers, and that is because I normally use public trackers for small apps torrents, which are mostly below 20 MB. And I use public trackers very occasionally.

Kirstein
11-21-2007, 06:32 PM
I don't use public tracker, but when I did I always tried to at least seed back what I took.

EvanUnisil
11-21-2007, 06:35 PM
I use public trackers for all general stuff - music, e-learning (I dont have any private trackers for this) amongst others. They're only small things and I don't find them to be a big enough deal to have to get from a private tracker. I usually leave all torrents on all day for about three days. By the time I remove it I'll have uploaded to like 5.00+

i DO hit and run on public trackers...no shame in it. there are things that i will seed like linux distro or several other large freewares, but even then....still dont put too much effort into it.

When I finished download I upload about 1.2 or more.
Now I use the private trackers, and I upload about 2 and more.

Well, come to think of it when I download something from the public trackers the ratio upon completion is > 1.

Even though there's no ratio I'd still stay to seed, because that's what file sharing is about  ..but I guess the people saying they hit n' run so it with other things as well, gnutella, edonkey, etc. Shame on you :P

people dont seed on public trackers i get 10k/s download rate or less

NordicP2P
11-22-2007, 05:27 PM
I really don't care about my contribution on crowded torrents. Usually download speeds are slow and you automatically seed a lot so I pay no attention. On the other hand if torrents have very few seeders or leechers basically rely on me to get their content... then I keep sharing as long as it's necessary. Just like it should be, heh.

I rarely download from public trackers (when going to public I prefer others networks... like ed2k)... but in the rare occasions I downloaded: yes I did hit and run (of course seeded back way more then 1:1.... as generally ppl on public trackers upload veeeeery sloooow... )

that's for a very simple reason: IFP, MPAA and so on... so, as soon the download is finished, i stop seeding...

The way I see it, if I'm taking something from the community (be it a private or public one), I have to give it back. Having said that, I have to admit that due to security considerations, whenever I find myself using a public tracker I usually tend to stop seeding after reaching a ratio of 1.0. This is much lower than what I usually seed on private trackers.
