Make sure you disconnect from Xbox Live. It started happening about 4 hours ago. Various drives being reported. More info as soon as the logs are interpreted.

Thanks for the info, I'll let my friend know,
he was looking into modding his 360, and I'm pretty sure he intended on playing Live.

You think this is going to be a frequent problem? Or will the reporting die down?

It appears the bans are related to improperly created backups. I'm still online now with no ill effects. But if your backup does not pass all stealth and crc checks via dvdmullet, then look forward to a ban. Even if you use the incorrectly stealthed game offline, later when you attach to live, you might get the hammer.

Yes, this is the second wave of bans and expect more. If you mod your Box, its a risk you take if you what Live. Of course, you can still use the system offline without and adverse affects.

Good ole Microsoft still crying because someone else made their product better and they can't make a quick buck off it.

This may be a ridiculous question, I have no knowledge of XBox 360, but if I were to buy one, and not use it for live, but connect online for updates (I'm assuming that happens) could you get banned?

I'm guessing you get banned off of Live? Do you get banned from updates, too? Is there a way to burn an update disc from your computer to install on the 360?

Yes, you get banned from updates as well. Microsoft is only banning improperly created backups. If you backup passes all crc and security checks, then you wil be fine. I have never been banned since I have been online. And I only use backups.

You can also look into playing though XLink Kai. Google for more information. It is an alternative to playing online with others without the need for a monthly subscription.

In other words, it's free, but doesn't have as many people as Xbox Live.
