Guide To Using Bittorrent

As there were obviously technical problems and my guide was deleted, here it is again: You first have to download a copy of the Bittorrent client, this is the very basic client and doesnt have a lot of added features like the ones you may have heard of, see the next section for these clients. However this is the best client to initially learn with. You can find that from bitconjurer.org (http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/download.html).Once on this sites download page choose the windows installer link. Just forget about the Mandrake and Redhat files. If the server is down you can also get bittorent from HERE (http://sourceforge.net/projects/bittorrent/). Just select the latest build, it will be an .exe file.


For more advanced users you can download the experimental build, it available from HERE (http://ei.kefro.st/projects/btclient/) and a similar one called SHADOWS client HERE (http://bt.degreez.net/).(This is my personal favourite) <-- These two clients follow a similar pattern to the original client, where as others are completly different.
There are other clients such as ABC (http://pingpong-abc.sourceforge.net/), TorrentStorm (http://www.torrentstorm.com/), NOVA (http://blackflaw.dyndns.org/), BURST (http://krypt.dyndns.org:81/torrent/), azureus (http://www.gudy.org/azureus/), PTC (http://ptc.sourceforge.net/) (The other clients do not follow this tutorial so I would start with the original and use that a few times so you know what your doing, then use these).


Now that you have a copy of Bittorent you have to open the program and follow the setup instructions just as you would with any application. Save it to any directory you wish, it doesn&#39;t matter.


You do not have to create a shortcut to your desktop for anything, in fact you don&#39;t even have to look at what it has installed if you don&#39;t want to, the program will automatically run when the correct file has been triggered.


Now that you have installed the client you must now download the specific torrents for whatever files you want. Unlike kazaa, torrent files are not searchable from within the client, so you have to find them yourself. Sorry i did have a list of sites here, but the BT sites are changing there url&#39;s so much for various reasons, i decided to just put down this site one site instead that keeps a list of up to date sites:

Once you find a Bittorrent site, navigate the site to find the specific file you want. Then click on the link. I personally always right click on the link and save the torrent to my hard disc. This means that you do not have to return to the site to find your torrent. If you decided to save it to your hard disc open the torrent file. Now in both cases the Bittorrent client should appear.


It will now ask you to choose where you want to save the file to. Using the hierarchical navigation system choose the folder that you want to save the file to and click OK. However, make sure that you have enough free space on your disc to save the file as it creates a dummy file the same size as the file you are about to upload.


You will now see the client setup the file to be downloaded, this may take a while depending upon the size of the file you are downloading. It may also slow down your computer for a few seconds. This is supposed to happen so be patient.


Congratulations you are now on you way to downloading a file using Bittorrent, you just have to wait until the client tells you that the file is complete. Patience is key. Your download is proportional to your upload on Bittorent, so the faster you upload the faster your downloads will be.


This is bold as it is the most important. Remember to keep your Bittorrent window open once your download is complete. This is called seeding and it allows other people to download from you.
Additional common question

How to resume downloads: To resume you just click on the original torrent file that you saved to your hard disc, choose the exact same folder that you started saving the file to originally. Once Bittorent begins, instead of creating a new file you will see the client checking the original file. Then it should continue downloading as normal.

Why are my downloads so slow: As I said earlier the downloads are proportional to your uploads so if you upload less then you will also download less. If you are lucky you may begin downloading the file while there are lots of seeds, and since they have completed 100% of the file they will be uploading to you and not downloading from you and hence your download will be increased.

Why can I see my downloaded files but they don&#39;t open: This is because Bittorrent downloads in parts. It creates a dummy file and it slowly downloads to this dummy file with various parts. These parts are not downloaded in order, so you may get the last part of the file before the first. So the file will not open until it is said to be 100% complete by the client.

Can I view files with AVI preview: This is a yes and no question, I just depends upon what part of the file you downloaded first. If you are lucky you may download the first part and hence you will be able to preview avi files with AVI preview.

What is a Bittorrent tracker: A BitTorrent tracker is the closest thing to a central server in a BitTorrent network. The tracker has two main functions; first, it organizes the downloaders of each file by telling each downloader who else is downloading that file. Second, it displays information about the files it&#39;s tracking by acting as a simple webserver. The original tracker can display each file&#39;s info hash, name, number of complete downloaders, and number of incomplete downloaders. If you want to see this information you can download a program called torrentspy from http://torrentspy.sourceforge.net, all you do is install this program and drag the torrent file into the applet.

Unable to connect to tracker: This is quite a common problem on Bittorrent, usually if you leave your Bittorrent client open the tracker will eventually connect. This can take minutes or hours, it just depends if the tracker is down or not. If it doesn&#39;t reconnect after 5 hours I would try and find another torrent file from a different source.

How To Make A Torrent File

OK, this will pratically explain everything needed to make torrents, edit them and use the new back up feature for a secondary tracker.

first of all you are going to want to install MakeTorrent V2 RC1. You can get it from HERE (http://krypt.dyndns.org:81/torrent/maketorrent/).

PART1 - Making a Torrent

OK, making the actual torrent. There will be another section after this about backup trackers. So read that before you press the create torrent button. First of all you want to click on the Create Torrent tab. It should look like this:

Using the menu at the left navigate to the folder where the file you wish to make a torrent of is stored.
In the tracker drop down menu enter the tracker that you wish to use. There are also predefined tracker uls in the drop down menu.
See section PART 2 below for adding a back up tracker. For advanced users only.
In the file list (The white area below the All, none, inverse buttons) select the files you wish to make a torrent of. Highlighted files are selected files.
Tip: If you hold the CTRL button and click on a file name you can select multipal files without selecting them all.
Press the create .torrent button and choose where you wish to save the file.
after a short wait the file will be created.
PART 2 - The Backup Tracker

With advancedments in the bittorrent client, only select clients allow this featyre, it is now possible to add a backup tracker. Some sites do supply this, but if they don’t then avoid it completely. If you don’t understand what a backup tracker is then you shouldn’t be using this function, its for advanced users only. So here&#39;s how to add it. Ok, from the point where I mentioned this in the make torrent section do the following.
Check the use backup torrent box then press the Use Backup Tracker(s) button. You should see this:

Select whatever backup tracker you wish to use from the drop down menu or enter one manually.
Click the add button, it should appear in the white text area.
Press ok, and that’s it added as a backup
PART 3 - Editing Torrents

Ok, this is just incase the tracker urls change and you have to edit the torrents. First of all click the view/edit torrent tab
Press the ... button and select the torrent you wish to edit. You should see this:

Edit as necessary, whether it be the tracker address, the backup tracker or whatever
Click the save button.
That should be all you need to know about MakeTorrent. :D

Yeah it should work fine on win 98, however i&#39;ve not tried it myself i use XP.

The only thing i could suggest is using a different client, there are many out there and i&#39;m sure one will work. Juts try downloading them from the list on my guide and try each one. :D

I had the same problem with ME, but what i did was what it says up in the first post. Right click the torrent u want to download and save it to which ever folder, then open the folder and open the file and it should work. Unless you have a different problem, or i could just be talking out of my a**e. Well it works for me, hope i helped

Ok, peerguardian does work with bittorrent, i would use it if you get files from suprnova, i&#39;ve had a few hits from mpaa and riaa while downloading from there. I would add though that sometimes you can block ip&#39;s of ordinary users that accidently get caught up in the ip ranges. Personally i dont use it while using bittorrent, but i&#39;m from the uk and am not really too worried about this sort of thing at the moment, nor do i use suprnova much.

Amarjit i&#39;ll add that, but you can search for torrents, its just isnt built into the program. However some of the clients do have this feature built in. :D

@freak, no idea how to read that i&#39;m guessing its ment to be 15 hours 20 min and 49 sec, however if you take your speed and the size of the file you can work out the approx time quite easily.

And when you resume a shared file you do not keep your shared rating, because it resets the upload back to zero.

@skyhg99999, i&#39;d really have to know what bittorrent program you were trying to install. If you tell me i&#39;ll try and hel you. :D

i just downloaded BT so i am very much a noob, but this one thing i observed. the torrent and the actual download are different files. so what you are clicking on is the download file. the actual torent file should be in the temp internet folder, or you&#39;ll have to go to the website and download the torrent again, then choose the exact same directory where the download file is at and it should resume the download. makes more sense downloading the torrent itself to the hard drive.

ok, time for my question.

i have a 10kbps max connection, and it seems to me that unlike what is said here, the upload speed reduces the download speed in my case. anyway, i just wanted to know if there is any way to limit the upload speed?

i can just experiment around until i find a nice compromise so that i can serve as well as get served equally :) [right now, upload speed 7, download speed 3..data downloaded 3.5mb and data uploaded 3.3 mb :blink:] it seems to me that it is downloading only enough to let it upload some more :( ...this can take forever to download.

should get shadows client, and you can limit your upload whit it
+ its color coded, if it stays yellow ,then your behind a firewall/router and you will have to open up ports

if you gox xp, turn off the built in firewall, if you want a good firewall get zonalarm, zygate, outpost
those are the best and you can import the bad ip list, but thats just for security
also sometimes it just takes awhile to turn green, but if its yelllow all the time and your not getting speeds at or better than kazza (depending on seed,peers ect)

i am not sure this is the right place to post this
but
i have recently downloaded a file successfully using bit torrent and for the last 2 nights it has been stuck at 99% however tonight i cannot connect at all does that mean everybody has downloaded and now stopped and that i cannot finish the file.
please help as i only have a little bit left to finish off.

A quick answer, you dont open bittorrent like kazaa. You open the individual torrent file and that triggers the client to open. So first of all you need to get a torrent to test.

just click on one of the links on http://suprnova.tk/ and you&#39;ll know if you&#39;ve installed it right or not. :D

No this is necesseraly the case, i too am capped at a 30kB/s upload, but have reached speeds far superior to that. Its not an exact since its dependent on the number of seeds number of peers and so on.

With 1 seed and 1000 peers its going to go very slow but with 1000 seeds and 1 peer your going to get maxed out. :D

sweet, I just tested a file and my download was going 55 kb/s while my upload around 10-20, so I guess this is a great program. Hopefully my dl speed will go higher above 100 kb/s...lol

I have been using Bittorrent without any firewall with great results (Shadow&#39;s). Today I have installed the last ZoneAlarm Pro 4.5 and I would like to ask you something:

Bittorrent client reports green status light, but my download speeds are not the same as they were when I was without the firewall. It can be maybe a question of hitting some bad seeders in this period, but I would like to be sure. As you may know ZAP configure the access to the programs automatically, so I suposse bittorrent client has gotten everything that it knows after I have autorized it to access the internet. I get people downloading from me, and the light is green in all the torrents that I have opened at the momment. Do you think that it is still necesary to open the port range on the firewall, or everything should work fine as it is now?

lee551 with bittorrent you only share the file you are currently downloading or seeding. Please leave the client open as long as possiable so more people have a chance to recieve the file. :D

Yes bittorrent is a great P2P for games, movies(screeners dvd vcd ETC)
Tv series, apps and so on.
you should get downloads of 55kb/s for almost all your downloads on 512 broadband www.suprnova.org is the best site it also has a search site www.novasearch.net :D

can somebody help me please? i use to use shadows experemental, and i would always get a yellow light, and i read that it had to do with routers or firewalls, now i use azureus, it is a bit cleare on the problem, its a NAT prb, but i dont even know what that is. im guessing its my router thats causing the yellow liight for expermental and odd smiley for azureus, soo, i have a D-Link 704 anybody else have this model? i dont know how to
For a router, you need to forward the ports used by Azureus in TCP. By default from 2.0.6.0 on, it is only port 6881.

Try go to http://grc.com , then select "Shields Up." You&#39;ll be able to test your "Common Ports." If you are not behind any firewall or NAT, it should showed "open&#33;" . Also, you can tell it to probe port 6881-6889 using "User Specified Custom Port Probe" option.

I just did the shields up thing and found all my ports were on stealth mode including 6881-6889, this seems good for security but since my torent(shadows) has a yellow light(which I just realized is bad after reading this post) I was wondering what I needed to do to get it to work faster???
Im using winXP without any additional firewall stuff.
Also if I do anything will it make my PC vulnerable to anything??

if you have yellow light then you have a NAT problem,that is a router or firewall problem,to check if you have the xp firewall on you go to Start then Control Panels, then internet connections tab, then clicked on Advanced on that page, and finally under security or firewall or something you&#39;ll find something where there&#39;s a check box to turn off the firewall.


about shields up
If all your port displayed as green => "stealth" => you are behind firewall or proxy server. It should all comes out as red => "open" => you are not behind firewall/no protection between you and the internet.

I in fact think it is BETTER to be using super seed mode and &#39;average&#39; (maybe half max for your connection -- or even less) upload rate over a LONG period of time rather than using normal seed mode and a faster upload rate for a shorter period of time EVEN THOUGH in the second case you upload MORE. This is because with super seed mode you are giving the NEEDED parts to the swarm of downloaders to share among themselves. With regular seed mode, you may be uploading the same parts multiple times to different users while they NEVER get the missing parts they all need before you reach 1:1 ratio for uploading to downloading.

Note that with LOTS of downloaders/peers and many distributed copies between thm, super seed mode DOESN&#39;T work well. It&#39;s when the number of downloaders is few and/or a FULL copy of the file cannot be created by them sharing the parts they have that super seed mode is really needed. If there&#39;s lots and lots of downloaders, you&#39;ll end up sharing 1/10th of a chunk to lots of users and they won&#39;t be able to upload ANY of it till they get a complete chunk.

File chunks are typically 256 KiloBYTES in size, although they are often larger for movies. Even at 10 KB/sec upload rate to 4 users, splitting that equally means they each get 2.5 KB/sec. So it takes about 1min 45sec to send out a chunk to each person -- however BitTorrent likes to &#39;jump users&#39; on uploads a LOT if there&#39;s lots of users, so it may take considerably longer before you send the 1st chunk to ANYONE. Until someone gets at least 1 COMPLETE file chunk that somebody else needs, they will not upload anything.

Even a 1:1 upload:download ratio is only a general rule. Some torrents have SO MANY seeds that you can&#39;t upload fast on them because all the peers/downloaders are maxed out in speed&#33; Others need far more uploading JUST to keep those torrents alive&#33; I try to keep my upload bandwidth at least 75% used even 24/7 -- since I cannot save it up and it&#39;s separate from my download bandwidth.

For those with bandwidth daily/monthly caps, I recommend uploading at a (much?) reduced rate but over a longer period. You don&#39;t have to upload 1:1 with your downloads, but you BETTER NOT exit the torrent (unless you&#39;re just rebooting and/or will return later) if there&#39;s no other seeds&#33; At least make sure all the peers/downloaders have at least 1 (preferably more) distributed file copy between themselves.

Something new I&#39;ve started doing is starting FINISHED torrents immediately after rebooting, because these can start uploading immediately while I search for and/or start new torrents. After new torrents start uploading, I either slow or exit these finished torrents so the new torrents can upload and hopefully download at full speed. Once again this is because I cannot save my upload bandwidth up for later use... so I might as well give away all I can. :)
