No, it won't.

DDR=184 pin
DDR2=240 pin

Yes it makes a big difference DDR2 ram has a different amount of pins (different size) only later motherboards say after the pentium4 with a 3 ghz processor and later support this type of RAM, what you have is most likely DDR-333 SDRAM PC-2700 or DDR-400 PC-3200 both of which are compatible.
hope this helps.

DDR2 is more efficient and so as DDR3

That may be but it still won't fit in his board.

He'll just have to struggle on.

Probably has a coal fired power supply, too.

why is ddr2 cheaper than ddr?

why is ddr2 cheaper than ddr?

Its newer and most are using now , its called supply and demand . ;) Have you looked at sdram prices .

Here's an example OF DDR

Kingston 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM $38.9
512MB, 400MHz, Lifetime Warranty

Kingston 512MB PC5400 DDR2 RAM $22.9
512MB, 677MHz, Lifetime Warranty

Kingston 1.0GB PC5400 DDR2 RAM $39.9
1.0GB, 667MHz, Lifetime Warranty

Demand makes up most of the difference.
DDR is also harder to manufacture because of its higher density.

Right now, ddr3 is just entering the market and is very expensive because of the low demand for it. Although performance compared to ddr2 is negligible, the density of the chips will make its future manufacture cost a fraction of that of ddr2. I've seen predictions that in under a year with increased demand 4gigs of ddr3 will sell for under $100.
