http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v383/Hairbautt/News%20Images/MicrosoftWindowsXP.png"After a disappointing showing by Windows Vista SP1 (see previous post), we were pleasantly surprised to discover that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (v.3244) delivers a measurable performance boost to this aging desktop OS. Testing with OfficeBench showed an ~10% performance boost vs. the same configuration running under Windows XP w/Service Pack 2."

"Since SP3 was supposed to be mostly a bug-fix/patch consolidation release - unlike w/Vista SP1, Microsoft made no promises of improved performance for XP - the unexpected speed boost comes as a nice bonus. In fact, XP SP3 is shaping-up to be a "must have" update for the majority of users who are still running Redmond's not-so-latest and greatest desktop OS."

Great news! I have yet to make the move to Vista. Well, let me correct that last statement. I did try it, but immediately formated and reinstalled XP once it brought my system to a crawl.

I'm actually using v3244 of SP3 because when I had SP2 and the +80 updates my explorer.exe kept crashing.

People say "Ew, beta SP! Don't install it!!!" - I havn't had any problems with any of the versions. :ermm:

It's hard to believe the performance increase was a mistake. Maybe they are used to optimizing Vista already that they just applied that to SP3. Either way, I don't think I will be using Vista anytime soon so this is good news.

Hairbautt, you still use IE?

:ermm: Was it here?

But seriously, I reformatted my damn computer a total of three times in one week because my explorer.exe was givin' me lip.

I thought maybe I had edited/customized a bad file er somethin', but I reinstalled and left XP as XP and I would get the damn error reporting service for explorer.exe. (This is with SP2 + all updates which takes bloody ages).

So I was like, what the hell SP3 beta here I come and what'dya know. My system is stable (even with my mods - which I'm always careful about anyhow).

Note: Make sure you install SP2 first, then IE7 and WMP11 (and any additional M$ addons like the State Change Diag) and finally SP3 or else it'll say incompatible version. Which makes me wonder how they're planning the transition for all M$ downloads.

Don't need a benchmark to prove something that everyone can test out themselves. Vista lag in performance. Any computer noob also can tell the difference in speed between XP and Vista.

Yea great news regarding SP3. I'll probably jump on that. Ain't messing with Vista until they roll out more support for device drivers.
