I use randomly generated passwords for every single site I go to because it would be foolish to use the same password everywhere.
All of them are remembered by Firefox and I write down the most important ones. I regularly backup my passwords and other important things on a flash drive.

Firefox password exporter (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2848) can be used to backup your passwords.

@ tommy, any backup if paper is lost? and how do u remember all of those or your browser does the job for you?

@ mollusk (http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/../members/mollusk-188239), thanks for the link, but u don't mention that you use it so is it reliable?

edit: i just installed and removed it...doesn't seem to do good job with special character =/

I find that passwords are easier to remember if they a. are chinese phrases and b. include my chinese name in them.

Unless we have somehow met in one of my Chinese classes, you probably won't be able to guess it.

I keep my passwords in my head and pw protected rar on a flash drive in case I forget for some reason, which isn't hooked up to anything most of the time. And of course, they are all different passes!

They are all random, so it takes some time to memorize them, but once you use it a few times, you find patterns.

Yes, it's fairly reliable. The great thing about it is that not only can you import the passwords back into FF, but you can import them into KeePass (if you're on Windows.)
As a precaution, I basically backup my whole Firefox profile folder in addition to using the password exporter and store the info on my flash drive.

If your computer crashes you can either import the passwords or replace the Firefox profile folder with your old one. I usually replace the folder since it also contains extensions and preferences.

Create a load of passwords:

http://www.pctools.com/guides/password/?length=12&phonetic=on&alpha=on&mixedcase=on&numeric=on&nosimilar=on&quantity=50&generate=true

Copy them to a text file.

For each tracker, copy the tracker url back to the text file as you use one of the passwords, save the text file before exiting.

Let firefox remember the password, but you also have a backup on your hard disk as well.

Save the text file to your removable drive (usb pen drive is great for this) and you can take & use them wherever you happen to be.

I use random passwords for all sites e.g. 65lm2cldv53wbu&Ni7

Keep them in notepad documents in two different places and copy/paste them from there when logging in

Only downside is that it's very hard to remember them in my head, but that's the prize of security I guess

@ sarge, thanks...seems to be something that will suit me.

@ Blue_Skies (http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/../../members/blue-skies-161000), i think you should let ur browser memorize the pw...too much work to c & p pw while logging in, don't u think?

I use a password manager which generates different PW for each site. It outfills the field when I login and backs up the data to a thumb drive. It also comes with a portable version of the program on the thumb drive in case i need to access a site away from home.

I use 4 different user names and 3 different emails. I also use random passwords on each of my better sites but I do use basically the same passwords on my sites people would be less likely to try and get from me. I keep it all on an excel document on a flash drive. The excel document contains the following. url:User Name: password:Email:abbreviation:tracker content: how many invites i have.

I just use roboforms, to generate and remember my passwords. I run roboforms off my data drive, so its safe from window based fails. All the same i might just do what my dad does and write them all down in book. most of my passwords when they aren't generated are just two or three random words plus a number. so there hard to guess unless you have a very random mind. :P

Actually it's pretty easy once you get used to it. I don't use my browser because I clear it completely from time to time. Also let's say some scriptkid with nothing better to do comes up with some exploit that compromises my browser. I prefer to keep my passwords out of others reach. A random titled notepad in some random document or program folder using abbreviations that only I understand does that ;)

Firefox password exporter (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2848) can be used to backup your passwords.

+1, I love that extension.

I have different passwords though, and I usually can remember them. I relate words to the tracker and use that for the pass.

I don't mind saying it because my brain works in really random ways, no one would be able to guess it. :noes:

An easy trick is to come up with some random string of characters (say h5rjf8) that you memorize... then add some combination that is unique to each site to this string (say use the last two letters of the domain name before and after your string)... using this site as example your password is lh5rjf8k... now, you have a unique and random password for each site you log into that you won't easily forget...

There was an article over at Lifehacker (http://lifehacker.com/software/passwords/geek-to-live--choose-and-remember-great-passwords-184773.php) about creating and remembering unique passwords, very similar to herb's suggestion. I didn't read the entire post before, but after re-reading it just now I see it's actually a damn good idea

While SgtMajor's tutorial gets to the point, it is lacking in user security. Saving a password to a text file is NOT safe.

I recommend creating a password with Extreme Password Generator Pro (http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=1319), which is completely portable program (leave-no-trace, flash drive friendly). And, of course, create a password of at east 20 characters. Also, it is recommended to create a unique password, and username for that matter, for each tracker/forum/email/etc, if only for optimal security.

Steganos Locknote is a program that is completely portable, consists of one tiny .exe file, password-protected (protect your passwords with a password!), and is encrypted by that password.

Details from the Download site (https://www.steganos.com/us/products/home-office/locknote/overview):

Why use Steganos LockNote?
Store your most valuable notes as a LockNote
Hide your serial numbers, passwords, phone numbers and everyday notes in a safe place. Your informations will be encrypted using a password and most modern AES 256bit encryption technology.
Secure, yet simple
Just double-click a LockNote and enter your password to access your text files as usual.
No installation required
Move LockNotes wherever you want, as often as you want. A LockNote document does not require much more hard drive space than an unencrypted document.
Encrypt existing text files in no time at all
Simply drag and drop existing text files on a LockNote window: they will be encrypted automatically.
Open and free
LockNote is open source and is based upon open source technologies, e.g. the certified CryptoPP program library for strong encryption.Yes, and be sure not to forget that one password for LockNote! And label the stored passwords for that matter!

here's an easy way of creating a unique memorizable password for any site you join. Just use any word you'll remember, like your first name, and then add @siteyouwant.com. For example, for bitme.org, i might use [email protected]

Easy to remember, unique, and strong (14 letters, capital letter, symbol)

not really!

say, a hacker hacked ur bitme.org account (hope that doesn't happen), then he will notice that you have [email protected] as your password. The chances are he will try to login with...

[email protected]

and so forth.

I use the Firefox extension PasswordMaker. It uses the address to make a hash, which you use as your password. There are plenty of settings, so as long as you don't leave it default, its really secure. Plus you can't possibly forget them, and you don't have to back it up unless the URL changes. Brilliant.

if u want to use different passwords and cant remember if ur pc crashes or u have forgotten simply recover it thru mail, and if u are so concerned about remembering it,
just make one password, divide into half, reverse this same pass for other site, and then for some other site divide it into three pieces reverse them as u like.
in general have one pass which u can remember it and apply various probability which u can remember of, according to probabiliity u applied recover thru ur mind....bcoz brain is the only safer place to keep ur pass secure.

The thing is can any of these pw managers be fully trusted

I do know 1passwd for Mac is secure as hell... anti-keylogging, auto-lock, 128bit AES, master password etc... Probably the best and most essential web app for the Mac.

Holy old thread. Started back in 07.

Anyway, I use AI Roboform with firefox. Logging in is a breeze. I also backup my pw elsewhere.
+1 :D

AI RoboForm has been around long before Firefox started storing passwords. It also allows you to encrypt your passwords so you will only have to remember one password by heart.

After you sign in you it allows you to use single sign on which auto directs you to the website and fills in the password (Unless the site is secured by captcha)

I just run auto backups on the passwords folder so its all safe but you can also use it with a flash drive to connect anywhere...

I think I have various passwords, I wouldn't know now since Firefox memorizes them.

until it updates, may erase them? best to write them down or at least your email password.

Keepass being used here. Never 2 same passwords anywhere.
Great application, generates very strong passwords that can under no circumstances be brute-forced. Portable, leaves no trace anywhere. When copying the password it only remains in memory for 10 seconds, database is secured by one master PW.

I keep the db stored on my HDD and somewhere online too. I have never had any problems anywhere.

That sounds very interesting. Will have to look into that. Thanks
