Most MP4 files are created to be watched on hand held video players. Ther resolution is small and the bitrate as well. Its not a good choice for downloading and then converting back to a larger avi file. You should have searched for one that was already in divx or xvid format, you will loose alot of quality converting that type of file back to full size avi. Besides mp4 sucks in my opinion.

I know, its was the only one you could find, but there is alot of crap out there, put together by nerds who think they're so clever by using obscure formats and audio types. Download an MKV file some time and see what you can do with that. Its the same thing, if you want an anime with english dubbed audio you almost have to download a dual audio MKV file but boy what a headache to get it to a more standard avi file.

For every silly format they come up with you have to have a new converter to get it back to the basic avi. The best thing to do is to try and find one already in a normal format and avoid all the other crap. The worst you might have to worry about then is does it have the highly compatible cbr audio or the usually incompatible and bothersome vbr.

There's no guarantee but the free open source "AlltoAvi" will convert most stuff with the least amount of input by you. It has the most trouble with the nerds newest video toy H264. A totally obscure file format that they think is the new thing but only because it a pain the A to do anything with. You see, the nerds love that kind of thing, it means exclusivity to them, cause they're the only ones willing to go thru the 9 steps to convert it back and they chat with one another on the best ways to do it.

Hi there,
If you download video to convert it, try Convert-tune.
Convert-tune (http://convert-tune.com/index.html)
It works good for me. I download video from different websites and Convert-tune works very well.
It converts video to WMV and AVI, and other formats. And it converts audio also to
WMA, WAV, MP3, etc. There is an option I like, 'surf and catch video'.

I don't understand what you are saying here Appzalien. In my experience nearly all mkv files I have downloaded are in the x264 format, but you praise the mkv file (seemingly) while denouncing the x264 format. I do understand that mkv is a container format and you can have nearly any codec file for video, but in practicality they have been x264. I love this format because I have a blu-ray player and can manipulate this any way I want with either convertxtodvd (to make playable on regular dvd player) or with multiAVCD (to make playable on blu-ray, even better with SD-cards so don't have to waste blank media to watch a movie once).

However, one of the other poster's problems has been mine - converting back and forth between the blu-ray (playstation) and wma (xbox 360). I always download the mkv file if I have a choice, but I do have one that I would love to convert from wma to x264 but so far everything I have tried either doesn't work or the audio sync is awful. I have even tried Xilisoft but this always causes some kind of error and shuts down. Maybe the newest version works, but I don't know. Has anyone had experience in converting these hi-def formats while keeping the quality?

I've recently started using "Smart Converter Pro". There's a free version that lets you convert one file at a time, or there's an inexpensive "Pro" version ($10.00 on Windows, $15.00 on MAC) that let's you do batch converting.

The thing I really like about it is that instead of saying "which codec do you want to use" it says "where are you playing this file", and gives you a list of common devices... iPad, PS3, Apply TV, Android Tablet, etc etc... and then it chooses the proper format for you.

I use a PS3, and it converts mkv files to PS3-compatible .avi or .mp4 really fast, with (to my eyes) little or no loss of quality. x264 mkv converts to x264 MP4 in literally seconds.

I use DVDFab for ripping Blurays (mainly because it supports 3D), I still use DVDShrink with AnyDVD for DVDs (simple and fast), Handbrake does a good job converting everything else, and MakeMKV is really handy tool. MetaFox was a good little tool for cleaning up MKV files that would make Windows barf... not sure if MakeMKV would have done the same job though.

For video file conversion, I like mediacoder. Mediacoder is free and converts things pretty well.
It does not convert the newer 4K videos. It will convert MP4, MKV, WMV, and MOV. Whenever
it does *NOT* convert cleanly, the source video is usually bad.

I usually correct source videos (MP4 or WMV formats) using Cut_Assistant. Cut_Assistant seems
to create good MP4, WMV, or ASF files. And there's always something I don't want to see in the
video anyway. A cut video source is a smaller video. Smaller videos convert faster.

I`ll go with Xiisoft.... only because we all know you can get a free key if you look around. Uses all cores and is well worth the money you probably didn`t spend on it :)

If home video stuff then stick with avisynth and virtualdub with deshaker plugin (many more really cool plugins available) is my personal favorite (and really proper free as well). If you are having some really bad home video re-encode moments then some of these plugins will blow you away!

Links (all proper public stuff)

http://www.virtualdub.org/
http://www.guthspot.se/video/deshaker.htm

(you don`t really need this unless you have some weird source files)
http://sourceforge.net/projects/avisynth2/

Again all free stuff and total legit so I think the links will last here :)

Almost all of the video converters out there now can convert just about any video container. Wondershare makes some fine apps, but you got to pay. There are a few good free ones out there. Just depends on how technical you want to get.

Anything good for Windows that can use Intel Quick Sync Video (hardware-accelerated x264 encoding)? My processor supports that, and I tried Handbrake, but wasn't able to make it work after configuring it. Encoding would get stuck at 0% and never output anything.

I very rarely convert video nowadays, but it'd be nice to take advantage of that capability if possible. In the past, I used viDrop (a mencoder frontend) to transcode TV and movies for my portable media player, but that was nearly a decade ago. I remember the thing required AVI with XviD video at 320x240 and MP2 audio, and absolutely no other combinations would work... thankfully this isn't something most people have to worry about anymore.

Format Factory best software to convert video files

Aronsmith
01-15-2019, 03:54 PM
Format Factory is a free multifunctional converter software that's able to convert all types of video, audio and image files. Complete, powerful and free, it's a must-have conversion tool.
Conversions galore
Before transferring files onto a mobile device (like iPhone, iPad, or Android), console (PS3, Xbox 360 and PSP) or burning them onto a disc for playback on a TV or sound system, it might be necessary to convert them into formats that are compatible with the device in question.
Format Factory is a comprehensive piece of software that lets you convert almost any file format. For files featuring multiple media formats, Format Factory can handle it all, including audio, video, and images, as well as offering a multitude of choices for the output format. It also lets you adjust the encoding quality of your files between low, medium and high.
With Format Factory, you also get some bonus features, including extracting the contents of a CD or DVD onto your PC, as well as an option to merge video and audio files.
How does it work?
To convert files with Format Factory, everything happens in a column on the left-hand side of the interface. This allows you to select the destination type (audio, video, and image) and which codec you'd like to use. For video conversions, we'd recommend using the "Mobile Device" option, which guides you in choosing the format according to the device you own.
Format Factory lets you add files to batch convert for convenience. Few advanced options are available, and as a result, only minimal adjustments can be made, although this means that it's easy to use. Complete help for beginners is also available, which explains the features of the software.
Format Factory is also available in 62 languages, and you can customize its interface with 4 different skins. For those who don't want to install it on their PC, you can download the mobile version, to use with a USB key, for example.

If you pay (or use dodgy adware utils) you are doing it wrong. Years ago french uni students wanted free 'cable' and designed computer software systems that went on to become ffmpeg and VLC- the defacto open source video methods that do everything. X264 and X265- entirely free and open source- became the best encoders on the planet for MP4 ASP and HEVC. It's all free guys- the best vid stuff in the world is all free.

The codecs and libraries don't do the GUI stuff- which is where for the naive it becomes a minefield. Paid or free, the devs are using the same free codebases- and the paid solutions are usually techniaclly ILLEGAL (breaking the open source license which, yes does have full legal validity). Worse, the paid solutions are usually horribly coded and limited. They sell to fools on supposed 'simplicity'.

Smart people get that video/sound work has a bit of a learning curve- but the advantage of climbing this curve is that you will handle sound and video much better, for free, with better tools.

VLC player itself can encode , but the interface is the pits. Handbrake is a good start (remember, handbreak is just a shell around the same code used by VLC player and all the other open source and paid solutions).

Sadly the open source video editors are mostly very limited or crap. If you are doing complex editing work, a paid tool is probably needed. But encoding, re-encoding or simple editing, and free will be fine.

You wanna go to a resource site like doom9 for advice and a list of good tools. No proper free tool has ads. No simply encoder/convertor should cost even one penny. But forums like this one will contain many posts that are really ads for solutions I would never use.

Remember, it is the lazy that gets conned the most. Everything worth doing is worth investing a little time for learning and research. Google and find one of the many resource/advice sites. Do not trust sites that push single solutions- not until doing further research.

PS I know this is sound not vid, but a proggy called fre:ac should be on everyone's list since it not only does all music/sound ripping/conversion, but the dev has coded multi-core versions of the main codecs that can give insane boosts to re-encode speeds on new multi-core AMd/Intel CPUs. Got a new Ryzen CPU- try fre:ac (which is a true free project) to watch your cores get a real work-out. Tho the same 3000 series Ryzen parts are vid encoding monsters thanks to their AVX enhancements over my gen one Zen.

I'm on Linux and find ffmpeg the best and the easiest one. There's a version for Windows as well.
In your particular example this would look something like

ffmpeg -i in.mp4 -vcodec mpeg4 out.avi

Better quality might be achieved with

ffmpeg -i inputFile.mp4 -q:v 6 outputFile.avi

It is also quite easy to automate the process with full control on quality, codecs, etc. once you get used to it with time.
