Hello guys,
I was wondering if roadrunner is trying to capping all the traffic on port 119.
Is there any way to maybe use another port except 119 ??
When I try to change the port from 119 to another, my alt.binz does not work anymore.
Any help please ?
thank u

Port 119 is the default port for newsgroup traffic for all providers I believe. It is solely up to the provider to offer additional ports. I do not have roadrunner so I cannot comment on if they offer any additional but I do know many other providers offer service on port 80. Maybe give that one a shot if you have not already.

I have RR and I am in NYC I just started with the NG's so I know very little but I am getting the same speed as my BT dl and sometimes a little better ( 1.1-1.3 Mbs ) is that good or are they capping me too?

I've noticed this too, marcolisi. I used to max out at ~5 connections, now they strictly limit you to 4 connections, before you uesd to be able to get more connections if you just kept retrying, and these 4 connections seem to be getting capped also.

I just went ahead and bought a giganews account and am loving the incredible retention, I'd definitely do it if you have the money.

Hi jmagar, reguarding giganews, how fast do u get in speed in kbps ??
Is it stable the speed ?? I mean does the speed stay at for example 600-700 kbps for a long time , or often it goes down to 200 kbps??
I also noticed this variation in speed while I use another usegroup like
easynews.
thank u

HiDertale , do u mean 100 kbps or 1100kbps ??
When I was going great, I was going at 700-800 kbps with 20 connections.
Now just 4 connections and going 200kbps and rarely 600 kbps.

I have rr at 10mega for downl and 512kbps in upload.
I know that in january they will add
20mega in downl and 1 mega in upload.
I guess maybe they are having a lot of problems
1)because they want people to move to 20
2)because they are having problem in testing the new lines
thank u guys

More than likely, you aren't being capped.

Using a free ISP news service is just a bit of a crap-shoot. You get what you pay for. :sage:

What u said, would be valid if rr would always suck. Instead rr newsgroup was great untill 7 days ago.
I was going at 800kbps with 20 connections.
The problems came in latelly.
By the way , now I am using easynews, and the speed is very unstable.
These things can not be just explain with your ipothesys

Have you called tech support?

@marcolisi: I get a solid and steady 950ish kb/s @ 5 connections, doesn't ever dip unless I'm uploading something or the like.

I had RoadRunner for 9 Years. Just found out about newsgroups a year ago. RoadRunner has unlimited News Group access. Which I was really loving...UNTIL COMCAST took over and pissed on me. I told them to take a hike and went with Bellsouth. DSL 6000/500. Bellsouth has unlimited with a 2 day retention.

Anyways... As far I was informed, RR has unlimited NG access and shouldnt be limiting you at all...Peer Guardian will block it as well as new firewalls and such. There are alternative ports yu can use also.

I use aLT.BINZ to download The Binary News groups.

And Pay For EasyNews For Server Access.

I can only have 4 connections but fuck it's free.but I still get 1100kbps Pretty much the same as BT for me so it is well worth it for me.
