Me, in my meloncholy mood usualy listen to sad hendrix songs or radiohead, and a lot of oldies (rock wise). However with friends its metallica and lots of strange rock.

I actually like listening to Metallica Load And Reload or old school rock (when with family)
With friends i would listen to whatever...cause we would just be talking the entire time...

Even though a rap fan I enjoy listening to pop in a long journey home, songs like If you ever - East 17 and 'Bring it all back - S club 7'.

You're joking surely TR?
If i was gonna lie in bed in the dark listening to some tunes, i'd put songs like
Bryan Adams - Run To You (it reminds me of playing GTA Vice City and puts me in a good mood)
Smashing Pumpkins - Soma (and a few more by them)
The Used - On My Own
The Verve - Space and Time (and a few more of their songs)
A Perfect Circle - Magdalena
Travis - The Fear (maybe a couple more)
Some Bob Dylan
Some Crowded House
Norah Jones - Seven Years
Some David Bowie
Madness - It Must Be Love
Some Beatles songs
Barenaked Ladies - When I Fall
Boy Sets Fire - Secret Track
Some Coldplay
Some Idlewild
If i'm not sleeping by this point i'd be surprised.
Driving in a car at night has a different vibe. Depends who you are with. I was in Florida on vacation with a few friends back when Hybrid Theory from Linkin Park came out, and i'm still not a big fan, but when i hear those songs i can remember those car journeys back to our villa really clear. A lot of the music matched the lightning storms on the way back.
