View Full Version : Tip For Faster Web Page Loading

showstopper496
07-22-2003, 10:57 PM
This tweak will help web pages load faster, it has no real effect on download speeds, just helps your pc look up websites faster thereby speeding up how fast the page loads and making web-surfing more enjoyable.

For XP & 2K

use run, type in regedit and navigate to the following:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic
es\Tcpip\ServiceProvider

For 98, 98SE & ME

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic
es\VxD\MSTCP\ServiceProvider

On the right for ALL OS's change these entries: (ALL values are HEXIDECIMAL)

Class = 1
DnsPriority = 1
HostsPriority = 1
LocalPriority = 1
NetbtPriority = 1

To change the value right mouse click on the value and select modify and enter the values above once you have done all of them reboot to take effect and see how fast your pages load.

I'm using Windows98SE and all the values you specified are in binary.

Is this right? What should i do?

Doesn`t matter 1 (hexadecimal) = 1 (binary)

Hey, great tip, works fine, thanks!

Color me careful. Does this really work? And if so, only in IE or in Opera & other browsers as well? No offense intended. Peace.

Hmm im still a little confused....

This maybe a dumb question, but is it ok if it reads Class 01 etc.?

Like when i go to modify, a lil box comes up with 0000 followed by a value (the 0000 part isnt changeable). And if i just punch in '1', it comes up as '0000 10'.

Does this mean 1, or 10, or sumthin else (as u can probably see im an idiot when it comes to binary)

What should i put?

zapjb

OK. Damn this works for me with Opera. Haven't tried IE yet. Saved my old settings just in case. TY B)

This tweak helped somewhat. Perhaps from a five second average page load to a measely two. Decent. It is not intended for helping internet speed, I know, but it does help page loading (once you get to the site). I give it three out out of four stars. B)

Now how about one that cuts down the load time when you logon to your system altogether? XP is notorious for "stalling" before deciding to load the start-up programs. I know that there is a tweak similiar to the one for internet page loading (registry value edit), however, it has been so long since I have come across it that I have forgotten what to edit.

I dont buy that :lol: . This tip may help page load performance but in no way will it increase file download speeds. If your on 56k then thats all your gonna get is max 56kps nothing more. Because thats all your modem is capable of.

Speaking of 56k I think it should be free. every country or state should have local ras (routing and remote access) servers where people can dial in and connect to the net for free. I mean damn what the hell do we pay taxes for? :huh: Luckily I dont have to deal with that problem. :D

Who said ANYTHING about downloading speeds? I was talking about WEB PAGES LOADING UP, which is what this thread is about. What I'm saying is I noticed web pages load faster even whle I'm downloading.

hey sorry for being so dumb but help plz

but i use 98 se and my settings are in binary. this is what they were originally

"LocalPriority"=f3,01,00,00
"HostsPriority"=f4,01,00,00
"DnsPriority"=d0,07,00,00
"NetbtPriority"=d1,07,00,00
"Class"=08,00,00,00

this is what they look like after modification

Class = 01
DnsPriority = 01
HostsPriority = 01
LocalPriority = 01
NetbtPriority = 01

is that ok

or should it look like this?

Class = 10
DnsPriority = 10
HostsPriority = 10
LocalPriority = 10
NetbtPriority = 10

I've done this tip in the past and yes it does work on most, yet if u want to make it even faster then here's my tip:

1. understand exactly how Name Resolution works and what steps it takes to process your request NetBIOS name cache — A client first queries the local NetBIOS name cache. NetBIOS names and IP addresses are preloaded into the name cache when a #PRE entry for the names and IP addresses appears in the LMHOSTS file
WINS server — If the unresolved NetBIOS name isn’t found in the name cache, NT tries to locate that name using a WINS server.
Broadcasts within an IP subnetwork — If the name cache and WINS server aren’t available or fail to produce a match, the client typically tries a broadcast to the other computers in the network
LMHOSTS file(s) — If a broadcast fails to resolve the name and “Enable LMHOSTS Lookup” is checked, the client looks at the LMHOSTS file for the entries that weren’t preloaded into the NetBIOS name cache
HOSTS file — If the LMHOSTS file search fails, the client then looks at the HOSTS file
DNS server — If “Enable DNS for Windows Resolution” is checked, the client queries the DNS server, which returns the IP address

Knowing the order of name resolution methods will help you optimize access to resources-Microsoft
2. make sure that the value assigned to HOSTS is arithmetically lower than that for DNS and WINS
3. Other registry to consider tweaking HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NBF\Parameters
4. Last but certainley not least, is adding the IP addresses of the sites u visit often. Remember, without this step, the query to identify/translate the name addresse you typed is initiated.

Note that AOL doesn't use the standard TCP/IP stack (at least not the last time I checked)

In conclusion, these tips may or may not work for you. It has for me, for many years and with the new addition of NetLimiter, believe it or not - some sites decline my connection "error-connection is too fast". THIS IS NOT A JOKE.
Use with caution and always backup your registry before attempting any kind of change. good luck.
