It's hard to say whether there is one guitarist who is the absolute fastest. It definitely wouldn't be the overrated Herman Li though. Perhaps Rusty Cooley would come close

Good call on Paul Gilbert. Since lee brought up Racer X, I feel like I should toss Bruce Bouillet out there as well. Anyone who can keep up with PG in 2-part harmony has to have some pretty serious technique.

Marty Friedman is pretty fast too, as is John Petrucci.

All of the guys named above are fantastic. My personal favourite is probably Joe Pass -- when I hear him play, I wonder what the point of my own playing is.

Well i watched a recording from competition in shredding from the 70s with several famous guitarists. Yngwie Malmsteen won that one, competed with e.g. Van Halen and Clapton if im right.

But hey, its impossible saying who is the fastest. However, i would put my vote on Steve Vai! I think Joe Satriani was Vais music teacher or the other way around, he's fast as hell also anyhow.

@Luchohhh Flea plays the bass, I strongly like you if you count the bass guitarists as simply guitarplayers, i sometimes do as well. If so i throw one in for Flea and one for Jonas Hellborg.

There is a discrepancy as to who the fastest guitar player is, as even when measuring speed there are multiple factors to take into consideration. I think Michael Angelo Batio is considered the fastest, but there are some other guys who are really pushing the limits of speed. John Petrucci, Steve Vai, Herman Li, and Joe Satriani are some brilliantly fast musicians, although I usually don't dabble in said music.

Just for the record, Clapton's nickname "slowhand" was an intentionally erroneous nickname as he was so fast (for the time period) that they, the public, considered it ironic to call him slowhand, kind of like the cliche mafia thug named "Tiny". Jimi Hendrix was incredibly fast as well, and brilliantly creative.

there are many fast players that are shitty players because if your altimite goal is just to go fast believe it or not its not that hard. take the Penintonic scale which many rock solos are based on. many fast player just use that and nothing else, meaning they practices it up and down over and over and and thats all they do, it sound really bland and very plain. many really fast players do this and it sound incredible because of the speed yes but listen to heartbreaker (led zeppelin) and you will hear a guitarist using many scales, techniques and keys that many fast players are just unable to do.
I'm not naming names but listen to def leppared (oops just did), and other 80's bands then listen to Jimmy page or Hendrix and you will see.

Know anyother ?:w00t:

:frusty:

LMFAO, Herman Li's is not that fast man, he can't even play that solo from Through the fire and flames at full speed live, they ahve to take it down to 180bpm instead of 200 which is a huge diff considering 16th notes are the meat and bone of the solo from that song.

My choices would be:

(Based on the solos/leads they play, not counting how fast a person can tremelo pick, I'm talking either sweeping or 3 notes per string kinda thing, you know, actually shredding not fake shredding.)

Note: Other than Michael Amott and Jeff Loomis, I'm not a fan of the other artists listed here, I've heard A LOT of their work but I'm not a fan of them. This list is about as unbiased as it's going to get.

5) Jeff Loomis of Nevermore, he's not as good as Rusty Cooley, but if there was ever an award for "2nd best sweep picking/shredder", he would get it. His sweeps are fucking fast and beautiful, and the only person I've heard that can beat him in sweeping is Rusty Cooley and maybe, just maybe Jason Becker.
Loomis in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oipOtikCJQM (solo at 2:56=about 1/4 times faster than Herman Li can play, solo at 4:54 = fastest sweeps I've heard [sound quality is shit, download actual song entitled "Godless Endeavor"] right up there with Rusty Cooley's)
Loomis in action part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhGotdgXuqM&feature=related

4) John Petrucci of Dream Theater, super fast, pretty clean, def. untouchable in most areas.
Petrucci in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YT39qE9UDm8

3) Michael and Chris Amott of Arch Enemy, listen to the solo from "Vultures" (it's the 2nd main solo after Chris' solo), that's fucking fast man and its not a simple scale either, while most of the "fastest" guitarists just play scales, Michael Amott makes things pretty intricate and tricky, finger positions are as fucked up as Malmsteen's were. And yes, he can outplay #'s 4 and 5. Chris Ammot is also a shredding bastard, he's not the "fast" player in the band but he sure can play fast when he wants to (he just doesn't like playing fast I guess), Nemesis will always be the song that outshone most songs in the metal scene. The solos from Nemesis are a hell of a lot faster than what most guitarist can even fathom let alone play, to the original poster: Herman Li has got nothing on the Amott Brothers.
Amott brothers in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gu4J8aD5IVw&feature=related (1st solo @ 41sec= Chris Amott, 2nd solo @ 1:35= Michael Amott)

2) Rusty Cooley. God damn, look him up on youtube or download some of his stuff from Outworld. He can play circles around anyone, and I truly believe that he can easily outplay Malmsteen. The only problem is every single solo he plays sounds almost the same (his leads have variation, but solos, not so much). Yes, its ludicriously fast and it doesn't involve tremelo picking the same note, but its so fast that sometimes it sounds like a "slur" and seems that not much thought was put into it, he doesn't play from the heart and there is no emotion in his fast solos, but he can shred to kill.
Cooley in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3Eo1bXom2I&feature=related (if you think you know anyone faster...good luck)
Cooley in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gd5Y-IND1LU&feature=related (lol)

1) Malmsteen tied Jason Becker, there's really no need to explain anything about this guy, Malmsteen is a fucking legend and he might be over rated but god damn he reinvented shred guitar in the 80's. Fast as fuck. Becker is also a great guitarist whom I have tremendous respect for, its such a shame that he was diagnosed with that disease, if he were capable of playing today he'd be this generation's Malmsteen.

Honorable mention:
Michael Angelo Batio <-- great guitarist, fast, clean, and his stage antiques are top notch, double guitars anyone?
Paul Gilbert <-- his work in Racer X is amazing, I decided to learn "Scarified" the other week, fuck its hard work lol, those sweep shapes are intense.

I'm still laughing about the Herman Li comment lol

Yeah, they should check how fast someone can shred something with some tune/melody instead of blindly picking strings, like typing tests where they measure the speed based on typing some words/passages instead of blindly tapping keys.

I think michael angelo is the fastest shredder, but I like buckethead the most because of his soulful shredding (not true for all his songs though)

Slash from Guns n' Roses.

No.

The thread starter said fastest, I can play as fast if not faster than slash cann(last time I checked Slash didn't do sweeps, so yes, I can play faster than he can in some aspects), I don't get why people are so obsessed with a GnR guitarist, yea he was great and probably still is, but no where near the fastest. Not even on the top 1000 list (for fastest), there are a lot of guitarists out there....

Angelo isn't the fastest, stage antiques are his forte.

Buckethead, shit forgot about that guy, not in the top 5 for fastest, but damn he can play, probably ranked number 6 or 7 if the list was a top 10.

And your idea about playing a passage is kind of flawed, if a test similar to the one you're suggesting was administered to a bunch of guitarist the results would be worthless. Every guitarist out there has a different learning curve for learning a short (or long) piece of music. So I'm not sure how one would devise a "speed" test for guitar.

I think someone already mentioned him but Alvin Lee from Ten Years After has to be one of the fastest guitar players in Rock. I would imagine there is someone faster (there is always someone faster) but Alvin probably had the greatest critical acclaim of the really fast guitarists.

Clapton, Hendrix, Page, even Peter Green and numerous others probably have a greater stake in the all time greatest guitarist claim but Lee certainly was quicker.

I know whom you talk of, and I agree. He was the pick of the crop from the guitarist you listed, he wasn't by any means "great", but he sure was fast.

It's a shame not many people know of him and instead always talk about how Van Halen was/is god.....Alvin Lee can play circles around Halen, Clapton, Hendrix or Page, and those guys were guitar gods (of sorts), so that's saying a lot! I was watching "night of the guitars" on youtube a few weeks ago, great great guitarist.

It's definitely not Herman Li... Dragonforce can't play live period. I have no idea how they originally got the intro to through the fire and flames recorded (let alone the solos), but in concert they have to dub it on a synthesizer. I suspect they did multiple takes until he finally successfully hit the pattern, and then just looped it a few times to complete the intro sequence.

I'd agree with Michael Angelo... and John Petrucci definately has some quick moments.

I'd agree with Michael Angelo... and John Petrucci definately has some quick moments.

The solos' on "Inhuman Rampage" (album) were all sped up, they played them at about half to 3/4 speed then just sped them up. A lot of people will argue that if you speed up the original recording then it would become high pitch, this is true. But if you increase the "tempo" then it's not a problem, heck I can record a slow sweep pattern at about 100bpm on a program called Audacity (freeware) and then speed up the tempo without messing up the pitch of the audio.

I've seen em play live twice, my god they suck, there are some parts (not even solos/leads) that they stumble on like simple power chord tremelo picking/etc. They get so wasted it's unbelievable how they manage not to fall over drunk. The only solo that Herman can do live is the one from "Valley of the Damned" and even then he can only do the intro to the solo, once the whammy pedal part comes in he just kinda improvs and it sounds like utter shit.

@THEWHO27:
Van Halen is not the fastest, neither is Hendrix, great guitarists though.

@M3dium: Zakk Wylde is a pretty cool guitarist, by no means the fastest though. Michael Amott can play circles around him and M.A. isn't the fastest either.
