Rock, no question.

I'll listen to just about anything but rap. I do like some of the old stuff tho - Slick Rick, PE, Tribe, 8-Ball and MJG, Geto Boys, Run-DMC, NWA and the like. I'm even known to have some Outkast or 2Pac (from when he was alive; not the 30 albums that have since been released) and Jay-Z (but only the Reasonable Doubt album)

Otherwise, southern rap styles are OK as I have a couple of friends who listen to it and I hear a bit that way.

However, all the newer stuff all sounds the same to me. Shit.

Rock and rap are very broad categories.
Not all rock is like that, actually, very little is like that.

I voted for rock.
Particularly because of indie rock, and classic rock.
And I don't want to hear about shaking like a saltshaker, dropping it down low, jocking, and supersoaking that hoe all the time. Only sometimes. :D
With that being said, I'll listen to rap that actually has decent lyrics any time. <3Tupac

Rap is flooded with too much commercial bullshit these days, ie 50 cent, G-Unit, Souljah Boy or whatever. Get yourself some CunninLynguists, Jedi Mind Tricks, Immortal Technique, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Public Enemy, Outkast, Saigon, Wu-Tang Clan and I'm sure you will have a different perception of rap rather than just speaking of drugs, guns, hoes, bitches and what not.

Rap. I only listen to rock to find hard guitar samples. But i prefer 90's Hip-Hop vs this commerical wack Hip-Hop where feed now of days.

Stoupe from (Jedi Mind Tricks) is a good dude. I talk to him online here and there. For any of you myspacers out there I go under the name Zahn. I agree there was so much good Hip-Hop back in the 90's. My favorite Wu-Tang, Immortal Technique, Canibus, Mobb Deep, Nas, Tupac, Biggie, Etc.

refering to an old topic in here

Why compaire 2 such different styles?

For me it's no choice, only Rock has to do with music. Rap is just people talking dirty very fast. They often try to hide that by using babes with angelvoices and samples of old hits. But they ain't fooling me. Everyone can rap, it's nothing special. ;)

Is Rap older than Rock? Is Rap just a new name for an old form of 'music' that preceded Rock?:)

Talking Blues is a song form that can trace its surface roots to a recording by the Greenville Trio in April of 1926. Its lineage goes much deeper — to spirituals — and an odd combination of the religious and the profane. The talking blues have served as a vehicle for social commentary for Woodie Guthrie, Bob Dylan, and hundreds of others. Musician and researcher Stephen Wade — creator of the stage show, Banjo Dancing, and a contributor to numerous folklore journals.

I guess you mean more special than ©rap?

I'm actually an old school rocker, Deep Purple/Mothers Finest/Iron Maiden/ACDC kinda rock.
But even nowadays there are still good bands, Dave Matthews/ Porcupine tree/Pearl Jam.

What makes Rock special?
Well good rock is really timeless music. It doesn't age. If i listen to Yes or AC DC it could have been a brand new band. It is like hearing Mozart! I doubt that 20 years from now someone will play snoop dogg/ Notorius B/eminem or whoever because it is so good, so timeless :whistling

Depends on where you look for the rap, mainstream/commercial rap sure sounds like that most of the time. However it is not hard to find people that rap about other things, I have found quite a lot of it. Not that I like all of it. Just that it is there.

New rap is very infant and it is avoiding revolt... And revolt is essence of rap.

Although, I think it is very interesting that a lot of people I spoke with hate rap. So, there is sometimes that stereotypical situation: rock lovers hate rap (and rappers) and mirror.

Rap is my cup of tea, while rock is not. Actually, there are some guitar bands I adore.

Being a hip-hop producer myself and a huge wu fan. That last 8 diagram joint wasn't really that good. I was hughly disappointed. "Rushing Elephants" and "My Heart Gently Weeps" (Beatles sample) were the only two real goods records. Oh and "Weak Spot".

Yea Whodini use to be the shit. I loved that "Friends" record early 80's hip-hop. That last dj jazzy jeff album (2006) surprised me, it was actually really good, just didn't get enough promotion unfortunately. Use to be a huge Fresh Prince fan.

Rock, for sure.

It just is so much more complex, the addition of an actual melody to meaningful lyrics instead of an extremely repetitive beat, with a monotone voice talking about his "ho's in da ghettos".....

I found the comment about "my music has to have soul" ironic coming from someone who loves rap. The only soul I see in rap is degenerate skinny white boys rolling around in their civics blaring the same damn shit beat.

I can respect some hip-hop artists for their work, but the majority of "rap" I consider primitive and 'gangsta-wannabe'-ish. The people that listen to that try to project a persona that they simply do not possess. Sometimes I find it slightly amusing.

Definitely both.
Both rock and rap are great, as long as you find the find style for your tastes.
I prefer southern rap, like old Lil' flip stuff (The Leprechaun, You Gotta Feel Me) + his newest big-time release album I Need Mine $$ has lots of different rap styles in its numorous tracks, and Lil' Wayne, Z-RO (free zro), and chamillionaire. Of course the old stuff is great (2pac, NMW, Biggie)
I prefer a wider age-range of rock, however. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are great, as well as Dave Matthews. (Crash is a great album imo)

Rock, definitely. Rap, for me, is not musical. I'm not saying it's not artistic in its own way, but I enjoy music where they play real instruments and actually have a vocal melody. Additionally, I find most of the music I listen to needs some sort of guitar (rock/metal/punk/prog etc), which rap also lacks.

Smith
06-27-2008, 02:46 AM
I seen some cold nights and bloody days
They grab and me bullets spray
They use me wrong so I sing this song 'til this day
My body is cold steel for real
I was made to kill, that's why they keep me concealed
Under car seats they sneak me in clubs
Been in the hands of mad thugs
They feed me when they load me with mad slugs
Seventeen precisely, one in my head
They call me Desert Eagle, semi-auto with lead
I'm seven inches four pounds, been through so many towns
Ohio to Little Rock to Canarsie, livin harshly
Beat up and battered, they pull me out
I watch as niggaz scattered, makin me kill
But what I feel it never mattered
When I'm empty I'm quiet, findin myself fiendin to be fired
A broken safety, niggaz place me in shelves
under beds, so I beg for my next owner to be a thoroughbred
Keep me full up with hollow heads

[Chorus: Nas (repeat 2X)]

How you like me now? I go blaow
It's that shit that moves crowds makin every ghetto foul
I might have took your first child
Scarred your life, crippled your style
I gave you power
I made you buck wild

[Nas]
Always I'm in some shit, my abdomen is the clip
The barrel is my dick, uncircumcised
Pull my skin back and cock me, I bust off when they unlock me
Results of what happens to niggaz shock me
I see niggaz bleedin runnin from me in fear, stunningly tears
fall down the eyes of these so-called tough guys, for years
I've been used in robberies, givin niggaz heart to follow me
Placin peoples in graves, funerals made cause I was sprayed
I was laid in a shelf, with a grenade
Met a wrecked-up tech with numbers on his chest that say
Five-two-oh-nine-three-eight-five and zero
Had a serial defaced, hopin one day, police would place
where he came from, a name or some sort of person to claim him
Tired of murderin, made him wanna be a plain gun
But yo I had some other plans, like the next time the beef is on
I make myself jam right in my owner's hand

[Chorus]

[Nas]
Yo, weeks went by and I'm surprised
Still stuck in the shelf with all the things that an outlaw hides
Besides me it's bullets, two vests and then a nine
There's a grenade in a box, and that tech that kept cryin
Cause he ain't been cleaned in a year, he's rusty as clear
He's bout to fall to pieces, cause of his murder career
Yo, I can hear somebody comin in, open the shelf
His eyes bubblin, he said, "It was on"
I felt his palm troubled him shakin
Somebody stomped him out, his dome was achin
He placed me on his waist, the moment I've been waitin
My creation was for blacks to kill blacks
It's gats like me that accidentally, go off, makin niggaz memories
But this time, it's done intentionally
He walked me outside, saw this cat
Cocked me back, said, "Remember me?"
He pulled the trigger but I held on, it felt wrong
Knowing niggaz is waiting in hell for 'im
He squeezed harder, I didn't budge, sick of the blood
Sick of the thugs, sick of wrath of the, next man's grudge
What the other kid did was pull out, no doubt
A newer me in better shape, before he lit out, he lead the chase
My owner fell to the floor, his wig split so fast
I didn't know he was hit, it's over with
Heard mad niggaz screamin, niggaz runnin, cops is comin
Now I'm happy, until I felt somebody else grab me
Damn!

You cant touch Nas.

Rock because Rap as of late is nothing but cRap. Back in the late 80's, early 90's I thought it was cool because the artists and producers actually had an ounce of talent. Seems like all the latest stuff is junk that even a 6-year-old could come up with. A lot of repetition in their lyrics too, and really nothing to say. Back when I used to listen to Rap, rappers would actually tell you a story or something cool like that. Now it's just a bunch of idiots screaming into the mic with someone trying to sound like a robot through the chorus.

Rock takes talent to create. They actually use real instruments!! What a horrible future we live in! :)
