View Full Version : "My Computer" displaying incorrect HD size

I recently had my hard drive partitioned and decided to get rid of it and merge that space with my main partition. For the most part everything went well but my computer is displaying 212GB instead of 232GB. Diskeeper & the windows disk management utility both report the correct drive size. :frusty::dabs:

Edit: forgot to mention, this is in vista ultimate.

Possibly a reserved "backup partition" for recovery hidden somewhere?
Is it a store bought computer or custom assembled?

.

Where are you seeing 212 GBs then?

100% custom build here.

Was the old merged partition 20GB, perchance?
What software did you use to perform the merge?

Yea whenever you install a new OS they take up about 4% of hidden storage space. Even though your suppose to have 232 your OS will say its less, expect that. I don't have Vista but it's OS may require more hidden storage space.

It has something to do with the partition(s).
I am guessing that using Windows' disk management utility you converted both partitions to dynamic, and then created an extended volume.

Anyways, I don't know of a way to get the space back, other than a reformat.

Definitely the fastest and most certain fix.

Use partition magic 8.5 by symantec to safely get your space back without having to reformat everything. I wouldn't of used Acronis unless your dual booting multiple os's.

Actually, I found this little guide http://vistarewired.com/2007/04/07/how-to-work-with-partitions-in-windows-vista-xp-when-disk-management-doesnt-work/

Followed it, and expanded the main partition. Now "Computer" displays "213 GB free of 232 GB".

No, this is what it displayed before:

so technically it's a 20gb increase.

Good, 232 GBs is where it should be after a normal partition.
Mine (a 250 GB) is the same under XP.

Yea the OS will use about 4-5 percent of your hdd space for hidden files if your running XP, I had the same problem and i got most of my space back using Partition Magic 8.5 without having to reformat anything Anyways good luck!

What are these "hidden files" you're talking about?

With every install of Windows, MS installs secret spy software for the NSA.
Partition my ass!

It's just bs... Never happened on any of my computers.

I guess they think that a 500GB hdd gives them 500GB in Vista/XP or whatever.
