Looking to get a router

At the moment 2 Comps Wired.
I believe if it has ports at the back you can use it
as a wired router and disable the wireless part.

May want to wireless later So range maybe a factor ?

Want it to have Good inbound firewall protection

XP + Vista compatible

For CABLE Broadband

ONLY from ARGOS UK
Why argos only = Gift vouchers

So which one

LINKSYS WRT54GL (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124190)
It supports 802.11b/g, not n, which is the only drawback but most cable ISP's (in my state) don't even reach 802.11 b speed (11 mb/s).

I would recommend staying away from a wireless network (Especially for torrenting) but if you have to? I would recommend a Linksys, stay away from net "crap" gear routers.

I know this because I do too. My router constantly disconnects as well but more often on my wireless connection, which is my PS3 (every day I have to reset it for the wireless). The Linksys router I posted above plus 3rd party firmware is supposed to be the best way to go for the price and performance.

actually, i "had" a new router and tried 3rd party firmware, but that was the problem for "new" routers only have 2mb of flash memory and 3rd party firmware needs 4mb of flash which old routers have. 2mb isn't enough. shit companies trying to save a buck.

yes, i looked into that one [here (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1934567,00.asp)] and it has teh beloved 4mb of flash. meh, it's kinda late now. last router i had left a bad taste in my mouth.

good info for future reference though. thx.

there is a very similar lifehacker article on the process - turn your $60 router into a $600 router (http://lifehacker.com/software/router/hack-attack-turn-your-60-router-into-a-600-router-178132.php)
they use the DD-WRT (http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/index.php) firmware in their walkthrough.

too bad you went with the G instead of the GL/GS first. :pinch:

My advice - stay clear of Argos for routers, they are priced ridiculously high. Use your gift vouchers for something else.

Any of the routers here should meet your requirements.

I personally find the Edimax products reliable, and they support WPA2 encryption if you decide to go for wireless at a later stage. Although my connection is wired, my brother uses one for torrents over a wireless connection with few problems, despite the fact that his router is not ideally placed.

Aye up Lynx, Would you still recommend the Edimax? I am using a Belkin shit thing and it drops the connection regularly...driving me nuts. Not much money though so need to find a good, cheap and reliable replacement.

get a linksys router and flash the firmware with dd-wrt; this is great for torrenting

Hi sArA, long time no see.

Yes I'd definitely recommend them.
I've personally got the AR-7064 SuperG+A (no longer available)
My brother has the AR-7064g+.
We use the AR-7084g+A at work.

The only drawback I've found is with the DHCP server in the AR-7064g+. It seems to work by scanning the network for an unused address rather than remember which ones it has allocated. That's not a problem with the AR-7084 series (http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=13082&category_id=532&manufacturer_id=0&tid=ar-7084ga).

Other than that they all seem to work flawlessly.

I can recommend any products from AVM (http://www.avm.de/en/index.php3 (http://www.avm.de/en/index.php3)). Especially the "FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7270" is amazing!

I have a wrt54gs v.5 with dd-wrt 24 sp1 firmware. It's works great with bt (unlike the previous versions of the firmware). It connects, stays conected and doesn't slow down with hundreds of connections.

I have USRobotics USR 9107. It's pretty stable, never diconects, has DDNS (my IP changes every 24h and I can use my computer remotely with VNC). Really good

Netgear, Linksys or Draytek are pretty decent brands... should you buy from one of these brands you wont be dissapointed :)
