There are about 645636747346566735643757573456374567252435 pieces of software that are 'essential'. The 1st one that comes to mind is Corel PhotoPaint... i mean, i can't imagine my virtual life without a good graphics-editing program...

I don't believe an AntiVirus program is really necessary as long as you don't open files that could potentially contain viruses like *.vbs, *.scr, *.exe. I havn't had an AntiVirus program installed in almost a year and never caught anything. I used to have a software firewall running but now I have a firewall router, which takes care of that problem too. All the must have software comes with XP/2000 anyway, Internet Explorer (eventhough Opera and Mozilla are better), Notepad and of course Windows itself :D

There really can't be many must have programs because everyone uses their computer to do different things...

A must have software that i use is a NES emulator. Very handy for getting through those long and boring computer classes. I bet everyone can agree with me in this one.

It seems the question is meant for all users. And, not really what you think is the best. But what type of software is "must-have"

This shouldn't be a pissing contest.

Hmmm, Windows(et al) is incidental to the question. Duh, without it you wouldn't be reading the question in the first place.

I believe AdAware, Spybot or similar software is important.

A registry cleaner such as RegCleaner is important.

CD burning software ranks right up there(incl necessary hardware).

Multiple media players for movies(some just work better than others).

Same goes for Audio.

Everything else varies too much by user and what their interests are.

There's also talk of this one called Linux among the geeky, computer literate people. And gasp, can you believe everything is legally free? Or so I hear... That's absurd!

It look like some of you guys have never taken Latin 101.

"et al" is Latin for "and others"

Sarcasm works best when placed properly.

Edit: Dapadipz, definitely, my bad. K-lite(among others) is a "must have."

actually, "et all" translates as "and all" <_<

however, to save confusion you could have just said "operating system"

Sorry noob, but the "al" in "et al" does not mean "all." It stands for "alii", meaning "others."

I used "Windows" because most of us use it.

Sorry to be a pedantic, threadjacking prick about it. (my team is losing right now)
