im getting a new computer, or everyting apart from drives, taking them from my old computer.

my new specs will be
asus A7N266-VM/SE m/board
athlon 2400 xp
512mb ddr ram (pc2100)
coolermaster silent cooler.
cd-rom
24x cd-writer
4gig hardrive
80gig hardrive
floppy drive.

would 300watt cope with this system? i think it would but just making sure. :D

Yes. But go for a better motherboard, that one won't allow for easy upgrading later.

I believe 300 watts is the bare minimum recommended for any ATX board. The Athlon processors are pigs for power consumption though so consider that before trying to save a mere $10 or $20.

I have a 300 watt power supply with an MSI K7N2ultra mobo, an AMD Athlon XP 2600+, 512MB of DDR333 RAM, and a GeForce FX 5200 with 128MB RAM.

No problems with the 300-watt power supply.

the case i like comes with a 300watt supply.
and i was getting that baord as its cheaper, future upgrdaing isnt really gonna happen. the computer its replacing is 4 years old, i came with a 350 and uprged it to a 500 2 yr ago. the 2400 is the most the bard can take thats why i was getting it.

edit: also trying to keep the upgrdae under £200

Running a XP chip on a low psu can cause probs on some boards but I'm not familar with the asus range being an ECS fan myself. The best place I've found to help you with enquires like this is OCWorkbench (http://www.ocworkbench.com/index.stm). They really sorted me out when I put together my box.
Personally though with a XP chip I'd recommend a 350 watt PSU min.

i bought a 400 watt antec true power supply last year when i built my system... nothing wrong with having plenty of juice.

Theres nothing wrong with having plenty of juice, however theres one thing that has been overlooked the amount it costs to run, 300 watt is the maxinum for a destop PC, people who case mod may reqire more, servers will need around 400>520, which will provide pleanty of power but will make the electricity bill rise a bit.
