OK so without much research I was in Best Buy yesterday and I had a $100 gift card and I saw this DVD/Divx player (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8192733&productCategoryId=abcat0102005&type=product&id=1164157002483) with USB, on an impulse I got it It's the Philips DVP5982.

WOW I just checked another thread that came to mind and this player was recommended by Busyman™ (http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/members/busyman-117721) in this (http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/f-hardware-24/t-suggest-dvd-player-258730) thread ( just wanted to give credit where it's due ) I honestly didn't remember that it was recommended, it was just an impulse buy, but Thanks Busyman!

It's on sale right now for $59.49 USD and I also got the PNY 2 gig flash drive for $20 WHAT A GOOD DEAL!!! This player is fantastic it looks great the USB feature is just amazing! With the 2 gig I fit 2 Divx movies on it just to check it out and I transfered it to the stick in under 2 min and it was ready to play immediately. I am so impressed with the ease of the UBS features I had to write and tell you guys.

I am going to try the External USB HDD in a while but I have no time ATM Someone said that the drive needs to formatted to FAT 32 and currently my WD 500 gig My Book is NTFS.I do have an old 40 gig HD with an external enclosure I could hook up quickly but I have 2 questions. First Why would I have to format to FAT 32? Secondly I can't seem to figure out how to format to Fat32 I have XP and it doesn't give me the option other than NTFS to format to. Do I need a program to do this or what? Sure I could Google it but FST is always better than Google! Thanks guys and I HIGHLY recommend this player to anyone who is in the market for one!

i have a friend with the same dvd player and yes the hdd must be fat32. we went through all kinds of bullshit before enough googling finally led me to other people with the same issue.

i'm not sure exactly what the reasoning is for this (i think it has been explained in one of the many threads about this dvd player) but it has to do with the fact that ntfs is newer and still held pretty close to the chest by m$.

you can create fat32 partitions with other hdd management utils like partitionmagic etc. its mildly frustrating, but once it's set up, shouldn't be a hassle anymore.

can u attatch external drive to the usb port?

yes, that's what we're talking about with the ntfs vs. fat32 issue. you can use a usb thumb drive or an external usb hdd.

I am putting the HDD into the enclosure now I have an old 40 gig I am going to use. I Also have 3 500 gig Externals also but I don't want to format one of those just for the new player I think 500 gig's of Xvids would be a bit much 40 gig would be just fine. I still have to grab a copy of Partition Magic to format into fat32 though. Does anyone know if there are any other possibly better programs I could use?

swissknife (http://www.download.com/CompuApps-SwissKnife-V3/3000-2248_4-10485574.html?tag=lst-6) will do the trick.

It can't resize, move, or even delete created partitions, nor can it work with partitions on the boot disc. It can, however, make FAT32 partitions larger than 32MB--something Windows 2000 and XP can't do.

I have this dvd player, for about 6 months now. And, I love it! Upconverts everything, found a little hack to make it region free also ;)

Yes you need to use fat32, i just use my 4g flash drive and put xvid's on it all the time.

Vista allows me to format to fat32, fat, or ntfs.

Thanks for the RF crack.
Vista eh...Vista is GREAT! (http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/f-hardware-24/t-xp-v-vista-262071)

Seriously though. I do love the player alot but I put a bunch of Xvids on an old 40 gig external I slapped together and the Drive itself gets pretty hot after about 2 hours of watching movies. Does anyone know if this is due to the Constand reading of info off the disk? I will get an enclosure that has a fan in it soon, but for now do you guys think it's the old ass drive or that it has something to do with it being used straight for 2 hours?

One thing you wanna do is name your movies something short and recognizable. FAT32 doesn't allow long filenames.

You and me seem to be in the same boat. I have 2 500 gig externals, 1 250 gig, and 1 400 gig....almost all full of movies.

I use the USB keys mostly for episodic content. For instance, since I don't have the Sci-Fi Channel in HD (yet), I don't record Stargate Atlantis on my DVR.

I recently downloaded every episode up to 10 since they were HD feeds, renamed them SA 1, SA 2, SA 3, etc. to differentiate the episodes (FAT32), plopped them on a 4 gig USB key, and watched them back to back commercial free. After SA 1 was done, it automatically went to SA 2.

For movies, I periodically bring the hard drive upstairs to load more movies on the 250 gig. However there's such a shitload to watch that unless the movies are "must see" at that moment, I watch from what's already on the FAT32 hard drive.

What I want is hard drive downstairs that I can either hook up to ethernet or access wirelessly.

I just haven't got around to it yet but it is out there.

yeah, the hard-drive shared on lan look good.

You mean something like this right?

Here's an enclosure with lan capability.

i was starting to go down the exact same path as all of you...

i was going to upgrade to the same model dvd player (my philips dvp642 has been my love for years) and use my external 300gb hdd to sling media to the dvd player. my friend bought it first and the poor interface/navigation + fat32 short-filename issue made me look for alternatives.

i decided to buy an xbox for $100 off ebay instead and mod it, then install xbox media center. BEST. DECISION. EVER. hook the xbox up to the lan, share your tv/movies folder(s), set it up one time, and stream away. completely cut out the need for a dvd player period. it even scans your tv shows and movies and tags them with all the relevant info from the net.

granted, if you want HD then forget it. i'm not rich enuf to even approach HD seriously yet. but this was a much better option to play my xvid downloads than the dvd player + external usb hdd for my situation.

just something to consider if HD isn't a concern and you wanna cut out all the in-between b.s.

:) Sorry man I had to do it, I just finished reading that thread

wouldnt it get kinda annoying to have to move the drive back and forth from pc to dvd player whenever u wanna add a movie to it?

Well I use the USB stick for movies to watch immediately and I update the HDD every few days for more of a library thing. I don't have the time to watch all the movies I DL so this way when I have time they're ready without having to burn them.

Also Does anyone have an idea about the HDD getting extremely hot? Do you guys think it has to do with it being read from constantly or is it just an old shitty HD?

you said your enclosure doesn't have a fan so i'd say this is normal for a hdd that is being used consistently. if the enclosure is also all plastic it doesn't help. you should really invest in a decent enclosure. this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145654) is the model i have; love it. the aluminum case + the built-in fan keeps it from roasting. this model is newer than mine and has the firewire capability as well.

The enclosure I have is metal don't know if its aluminum but it's this one here (http://www.thenerds.net/MADDOG.Mad_Dog_MegaVault_35_USB_20_Enclosure.MDAEN350USB2.html?affid=8&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=MDAEN350USB2%5E%7E%5EMADDOG). I will get the new enclosure soon I just wanted to see what you guys thought.

Good point. I have a modded Xbox already (with XMBC) so I should probably do that. It has a 250 GB hd in it.

I bought the DVD player because it upconverts my DVDs to near HD quality. The USB was an added bonus actually.

I might hook up the Xbox again (and play all the damn games in it) cuz it will solve the problem of moving my hard drive.

What I really need is an input selector.

I now have

360 - component
PS3 - HDMI
Wii - component
Xbox (modded) - component
HD-DVD player - HDMI
DVD player (upconvert) - HDMI

I don't have enough inputs for the HDMI.

Seems to be a very novel device.
Not very highly reviewed though, due to quality issues. I would really be hesitant about ordering.

I just started reading those reviews myself, I think one of the reviews says it best "In general, the idea was good, but poorly executed." I have been having an issue with my HDD getting hot when I watch a movie from it also. I think I might just pick up an 8gig Flash drive or maybe even one of those big ones (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2013240522+1309425474&name=16GB)

While the idea of a DVD player with a USB port is a nice idea, I like my Dlink DSM320 media player better.

It's connected to my wireless network and includes a remote. I simply place downloaded movies/TV shows/music/photos into my
Media Server folder and view/listen to them on my TV.

I've got a Philips DVP642 but why waste blank DVDs(and my time) when I can view/listen to any media stored on my computer with the click of the remote?

It's too expensive and the drive could be shit.

While the drive could be used anywhere, the DVD player looks proprietary to the drive.

I mean the DVP5982 is at the most, $70, and a 500 gig drive can be had for $80-$100 if you shop. The 5982 is more versatile with the USB port imo.

Good find though.
