if i buy a new processor, lets say INTEL P4 2.6GHZ - SKT 478 533MHZ

can i just put it into my motherboard, i halready hae a dell dimension 1.7ghz.

OR do i have to buy a whole new mother board

if your motherboard has socket 478, no problemo. otherwise: buy a new one!

The thing that sucks about buying a Dell is the fact that you are kind of stuck with what you got because Dell are proprietary.

It would be cheaper to buy a whole new system probably, maybe.

i suppose if you have a lot of time you could count the cpu pins on the board...

I have been thinking about updating my cpu aswell, is the part on that program (cpuz) that says Package the pins.

its not just the type of socket, but also what the motherboard can handle, so really u need to find out what motherboard u have and check its specifications. To do this the easiest way is to do a google search for the type of dell computer u bought and it should tell u the motherboard name & hopefully specs. If ur not sure about anything it says just post back here with the mobo name and the name of your dell computer and someone should be able to help.
And u'll probably need a new fan and heatsink.
