View Full Version : Peer Guardian - The Boogie Man

First let me start with the workings of Peer Guardian, the Database is created through submissions, some good, some bad (hopefully removed when found), thus many people ar getting spooked from numerous "Connection Forcefully Closed" alerts when they are inaccurate submissions (possibly intentionally) One example is that I noticed Paul's Avatar is bloced by an IP in the Peer Guardian database. My Zone Alarm says the Avatar is located at picserver.proserve.nl with an IP of 81.4.78.5. Though in Peer Guardian when I load a page with Paul's Avatar it reads...
Connection forcefully closed on: 81.4.78.5 - MPAA (incl. MPAA.NL)
MPAA (incl. MPAA.NL)???? Don't think so. Ive' also found others Avatars on the board that are blocked by Peer Guardian with inaccurate hostile names.

An example of a recent post with a paranoid (or just worried) member can be read at
http://www.klboard.ath.cx/bb/index.php?sho...opic=56972&st=0 (http://www.klboard.ath.cx/bb/index.php?showtopic=56972&st=0).
Just one of many I've seen on this board. There are also blocks created in Peer Guardian by simply surfing the web, should an inaccurate IP be present.

Thus I think that only IP's should be present in Peer Guardian software with a link to query someone like arin.net automatically, the same as the PG Database web page has it setup, so that when you click an IP it quereys demon.net. This would cut down on the parinoia factor of new users seeing spook names that are inaccurate such as...

Connection Forcefully Closed On 192.xx.xx.xx - YourGettingSuedTommorrow By AA

Since some of these are bad submisions, which only spook people when they see multiple blocks from the Boogie Man while simply surfing the web, why show names at all, it should just be the IP with a quicklink to the a whois database if the user wants more info...

Connection Forcefully Closed On 192.xx.xx.xx (http://www.demon.net/)

This would cut down on the parinoia factor of new users seeing spook names that are inaccurate. People are emptying their shared folders in droves, and PG should be helping stop this, but I am starting to see that it is pushing it foward. I have talked with many people, intelligent and not, who ask "Holy shit PG blocked 400 hits yesterday from the AA, maybe I should lay low for awhile". Truth is it wasn't the AA at all it was someones avatar on the KLite forum or whatever. Another shared foler emptied though.

I would say that I was dissapointed when the new KL++ did not have logging for the IP blocking, but now after thinking about it, I am glad it dosen't. It's simpler. Lets you have some security without scaring the shit out of you.

Truth is even I found the Peer Guardian hesteria disturbing at first. The names SHOULD be removed, since it is counter productive in the whole concept of what Peer Guardian is supposed to accomplish...
Make people feel a little more secure, not scare the shit out of them.

Thats REALITY

Please State In a Response 1 or 2 Weather You Wish To...

1. - Have Only IP Ranges With A Quick Link To A Whois
2. - Keep The Boogie Man Names

I agree. I don't use PG myself as I'm not convinced it actually does anything, but others take what it says as gospel, especially when it's recommended by sites like this and zeropaid.

It's no wonder people are scared when they think they've connected to the RIAA 20 times in one day. Letting the user know the connection was forcefully closed is good enough, and the link to a whois is a good idea for those who want to see why the connection was closed.

one of the problems is that a whois won't always correspond an anti p2p group with the host/isp that the whois lists but i share your concern reality

i'm sure it's been mentioned (reality is a member there) but the peerguardian forum http://www.peerguardian.net/ is the place to report bad submissions and learn more about the database etc...

Then as discussed, make it a user option perhaps, so that names are OFF by default, this fixes ALL, and also keeps the alarmist at bay.

Also ddd, nice effort on everything else.

If as you say users are emptying folders because of this, then it would be a better idea to go for option 1, but is the idea not to alert you when attacks like this happen?

What does it actually mean when it blocks a connection, say from Univeral Studios. I know they are trying to connect but for what. It cant be to get your IP, they have that to connect to you.

Please can someone clarify this :D

You would still be alerted with the IP that was blocked along with a whois link if you wanted additional information, though without the Boogie Man names which can be very inaccurate at times, just simply spooking people.

Well, I think we need to keep the boogieman part, and I'm not just being a comedian here Reality. Come on, you people let's vote for option #2. At least it peeks your interest in who's out there looking in.

BTW don't forget to go over to PG and seed the guys some $$ via PayPal.

THE FILE SHARING MANIFESTO

So now the music industry greedheads want to play rough. What’s the matter, their coke dealer won’t front anymore? Those techno-ghouls have been living high on the hog for the past 100 years and now they’re upset because the river of gold is down 10%. If they want to play rough, so can we. The only reason they can afford to pay their lawyers is because we all still buy CDs.

There is only one proper response to the file sharing attack – a complete and total boycott of all new recorded music purchases. Imagine if you got a summons in the mail. We must support our file sharing brothers and sisters. I SAY NO PURCHASES OF ANY NEW CDS OR DOWNLOADS UNTIL THEY CHANGE THE LAW ON FILE SHARING!! If you want music go to a show, or buy or trade used CDs.

Copy this and spread the word! :rtfm:

This boogie man you speak of, isn't he the one that scares small children after bedtime? How does he get time to do that and use a computer? Only joking :D! A new version of Peer Guardian is out (v.1.99) hopefully this will sort some of the old problems out. As for your question I'm going for #2, just because I'd like to see which IP's are being blocked. But I do agree with you a lot of IP's are named wrong. My advice is to just tread carefully and only empty your shared folder if you get a legal warning to do so.

Also we might want to start considering the IPs that are tracking/traping your ip. most of these IPs are governmental or private sector working with their respected governement for the purpose of P2P & Proxies. However, there is a disadvantage to this, by releasing these IPs, then we're no longer helping in capturing pedophiles, cyber criminals, "terrorists" and others....

seraphielx
10-15-2003, 07:11 PM
that is true, but you have to think of who is scanning on the ports and programs that you are useing,i mean if there looking for kiddie pr0n than that is one thing.

as for the boggie man names that will be taken care of all the way soon,i have been working out the last of the invalid ip addressesss that are in the pg database.

a few of us are also thinking about adding a longer discription to the names and maybe even a dat so that peeps will know when it was added.

check for updates.

we've been doing a lot of editing of the pg db list (including the above nhi ranges being removed and then resubmitted based on fake file testing)- and yes a lot more ranges have been added

look for non anti p2p related govt (and military) and ad/adware/spyware ranges to be removed from the db as soon as i get enough of a consensus over at the pg forum

(some older u.s. d.o.d ranges accoutn for over 33 million ips )
that's dept of defense for those that don't know)

cheers,

it's important for pg users to use the daily updated list coz the lists at meth's site are updated sporadically (that is unless you go to meth's site from 1-5 am gmt coz that's the only time the live db is up)

check my sig link for the updated list

a lot of cogent ranges messing with browsing we're removed, the ntl ranges and other isp ones as well

PG is a great product, but it is not full proof. Just look at the people that have been popped by TimeWarner - Road Runner in the last two months. These users thought they were safe using a good PG and a Firewall. PG is great, but it is not enough with RIAA cracking down.

dingdongding
12-09-2003, 02:40 AM
it's never been claimed to be the best form of protection by the creator or ppl behind the p2p effort to id anti p2p groups

pg is good as a backup at least for the connection logging function- the point there being if enough ppl log their connections they can id the ips when they get a letter from their isp- most ppl getting busted are not doing that- and btw those "busts" are movie file related and have no real consequences as of yet

the majority of file sharers either use no anti p2p protection at all or don't use an update ip list which is not available at meth's pg site

as for the riaa lawsuits- a whopping 382 ppl have been sued

I want all of the government stuff and fbi, ect blocked. I mean I'm not a pedophile or anything thing but I don't want the government being able to see what I share. Come on ppl. They could harass you if they wanted to if they scan you shares and see ex: ip addressee 69.104.631 is sharing American pie 3, a few play station games, some xxx movies, and Microsoft files, exc. They could bust your ass if they wanted to because it is now the fbi evolved in piracy and exc. Watch a movie on reg dvd or vhs and see for yourself. If you are caught unlawfully duplicating the video, you could be faced with 10 years imprisonment, fines up to $200, 0000. Whoever thought about removing the fbi and government ip addresses from pg is stupid. Also the ad wear ones that are in pg being removed is also stupid. . I especially like that feature that peer guardian has to block ad ware and spy ware. I have modified my host file in c:/windows/system32/drivers/etc to block ip addresses of spy ware and aware. I use peer guardian to also block more crap like that. Using both these methods are the best I think. I also have anonx from anonx.com. It changes your ip addressee so others can't see your connection. The only thing I don't like about anon x though is that it won't work with ODC and Overnet. PLEASE LEAVE THE FBI, GOVERMENT, AND AD-WARE/SPYWARE IP RANGES IN PEER GUARDIAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what is that?

the hosts files are good for blocking ads but not adware/spyware (one way blocking)

also consider the blocklist manager by bluetack if you want the option of additional non anti p2p lists (meth also has a similar option in pr14)

i'm not involved in the admin of the pgipdb anymore but between all of the blocklist options you''ll have plenty to block- also rooted at bluetack has put together a hosts lists that is apprarently really good

and for those that don't know meth (pg creator) is planning on putting more effort into his other projects- in other words after udp being added to the pg xp version he 's not going ahead with any further pg dev

for xp users that haven't heard you should check out protowall

as for the pgipdb list i'm assuming that will continue to be done by meth/methlabs or bluetack.co.uk

here are some links in case anyone needs them

hey ppl I used the blocklist manager for about 37 minutes on Overnet and it found way more than just using peerguardian. I would usually run peer guardian on Overnet and find nothing. Look what I found using blocklist manager. 486 blocks

PeerGuardian v1.99b pr14
http://xs.tech.nu
http://methlabs.org
http://peerguardian.net

UDP support for XP soon.
Check Tools Menu for Blocklist Manager.

fyi peerguardian.net is getting closed down- for the antip2p list (the pg list) and others you can use bluetack's blocklist manager to access all of the ip lists real time http://www.bluetack.co.uk/blm.html

beyond the antip2p list the important ones are the ad/tracking blacklist and the gov/mil/research blacklist

also the ip research efforts have moved to the anti p2p and non-anti p2p research sections there

fyi the peerguardian ip database (pgipdb) is now being handled at bluetack.co.uk and will be named simply antip2p. in addition to using the blocklist manager to access the antip2p list among other privacy related blacklists you can check out the antip2p.txt here http://www.bluetack.co.uk/config/antip2p.txt

for those interested in finding out more about the blocklist manager check out http://www.bluetack.co.uk/blm.html

in general it makes sense to bookmark http://bluetack.co.uk/ coz it's necessary for those into privacy and security

also a note on the change from rooted for those using zaupdate 2.0
Quote:
For those of you using ZA Update 2.0 exclusively, this aint the end of the world
for hostname: bluetack.co.uk
and for Path: /config/antip2p.txt
