Western Digital 80GB,7200RPM, External USB 2.0 Hard Drive (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/wd800b008.asp)

CompUSA has this drive for $99 after Rebates.

Never have had a external and I need more Room to share Music at the Music Cave of ours.Just want a few opinions from the locals about this.Probably going to get it tomorrow no matter what others say.....but just want a few opinions.

Like is it a good buy(I think it is)?

And your opinion on Western Digital Externals.

For new storage hardware, I would consider DVD burner too,
those are getting cheaper,
for HD, I consider 120GB with 8MB cache. :)

This is just some stuff im throwing out of hat here... :P

But, since you mentioned it, External HD has a lot of advantages.

Cheers:

Well looks cool FC, one of the advantages is of an external that it doesn't matter if your bios supports big disks!

remember to profit from great read write speeds you have to have an USB2.0 controller in your pc.
Newer pc's will have those but the older once need an additional card for it...

Anyway, great buy for that prize! B)

Do not get it. Although looks a good price but higher WD are available with cheaper prices. Wait for the right deal. A month back I got Western Digital 8 MB cache USB 2.0 7200 RPM for $89 from Office Max. Keep checking and wait for the right price. B)
Hope you get a nice deal.

Update: Go to this site Tech Bargains (http://www.techbargains.com)
Scroll down and look at all the rebates and prices. 200GB is for $149 and 80GB is for $50.
B)
Go get it! (Hope you are in U.S :) )

Looks like I forgot to write GB. The one I got was for 160GB I was lucky! :)

The only thing is with those rebates, that you have to buy them online to redeem the coupons.

Yes but when I got it with all the rebates on that store.
Go check the site now, you will be surprised to see all the rebates you could get. I used the external HDD for my laptop. So bought a case and USB 2.0 card.

i'm jealous of the low prices for hardware and rebates in the u.s.

in the uk, things are much more expensive, and we don't get rebates

you americans are lucky...

Thats what I explained. You can make your own external with low prices. Buy a case thats for like $30 (USB 2/0 & firewire enabled) and a huge capacity HDD . Put that in and its all ready. I am using one of those and the total only costen about $110. (160 GB & Case) (USB 2.0 Card was another $30 but u dont need that I suppose)

OR are you looking for some fancy external HDD. I would say get your own case. Good price and great deal.

Just some links to external HD cases...

Starking Tech (http://www.computer-parts.dk/cgi-bin/shop/HDDCASE009.html?id=ypMsHXRU)

some more from a "shop" (http://www.tadara.com.au/categories/cases.htm)

q-tec (http://www.smart-kit.dk/katalog/produkter/default.asp/katId=225/id=1396/text=Q-Tec_750H_USB_2.0_HDD_Case_3.5_tommer.html)

lowen (http://luwen.en.alibaba.com/product/10105904/10152918.html)

mapower (http://www.mapower.com/)

There are plenty more out there... i just have simple ones called "Site" or something like that but already gave you that name in pm... With an additional fan i built in they work great. Have to say the external Maxtor i have looks more pretty, but this way it's a lot cheaper and technically equal...!

Got a pretty late in replying. Glad Jetje helped you already. The best play to buy them would be at ebay. Here I already did a search on ebay with "External Enclosure" Link (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?cgiurl=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Fws%2F&krd=1&from=R8&MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&ht=1&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&query=External+Enclosure). You can go there and chose the one you want and is cheaper. The one I got was for about $30 two months back inclduding shipping. So you just might get a nice deal there. But always choose USB 2.0 and firewire.

Goodluck FC! ;)

I really do appreciate the help guys...with the links and what have ya..and yes I have looked at all of them.

But I really do not want something too big right now.Just something to play around with and see if I like(I know $100 is not to play around with) but it is not too much either for what I will get out of it I am sure. :)

Go for a firewire drive; it's worth the extra money. I read a lot of complaints about USB drives and how a USB 2.0 bus speed will still only be as fast as your slowest peripheral. Search on google for "USB vs. Firewire", I found a review somewhere that had some good facts. USB 2.0 is fast theoretically, but it will never reach a speed faster than firewire according to the review. Firewire is good for close networking too, unless you have a gigabit LAN.
