Hi guy's, hopefully some of u linux guy's can give me some help on this..

Basically yesterday I tried logging into my server and couldn't, I knew right away it had be hacked...

I then got a mail from my provider and they told me my server had been "rooted" with root kit.

I got them to do re-install but they told me to update the kernel right away...

Thing is how do I update the kernel ? Will yum do it for me ?

Could one of u guy's post the command to update the kernel in Centos 4.

Thanks alot :)

I seem to have got it sorted by just typing yum update kernel so I'm sorted on this, thanks.

Try this:

I haven't used an RPM based distro in a while so I'm more familiar with apt-get update :P but CentOS is very similar to RedHat Linux so give it a try and tell us what happened.

If the box is rooted then reformat is the only way to go. You will never know where the hacker lay his malicous scripts.

Yes I re-installed, updated the kernel by typing yum update kernel and it updated..but still after that my server was hacked twice more.

I'm no linux guru so i paid to get it secured with firewall and a custom build kernel from admingeekz.

I've had no problems so far, but I believe that what I paid admingeekz to do, I could have done it myself if I knew a bit about linux.

Ah well tocuh wood it's sorted now.

Thanks for the info guys :)
