When I try to play a movie on VLC player it just plays audio and the screen is left grey. It just doesn't show the movie.

I have installed k-lite codec pack. Everything works fine with Media Player Classic.

I want to use VLC player for a while... please help me solve this problem.
Here is the screen shot when I play a movie... only audio plays.

May be you disable the video.
Go to Settings ->Preferences -> Video then check the Advenced options in the bottom of the right. Then see if Enable video is checked.
Just like this - http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/9340/vlzzzza5.jpg

Try changing the video output module. I have mine set to OpenGL, some others didnt work for me under vista.

Also I would highly recommend you install the cccp

http://www.cccp-project.net/

Klite pack is good but cccp allows VLC to pretty much play any video thrown at it.
Also download AC3 Filter and Xvid standalone codec.

I thought the idea of VLC was that it does not need codecs !

I understand that it has built in filters so that it can play the video files.

So how would loading more codecs help VLC play more files ?

Just as an aside I also have some videos that VLC will not play.

All i ever need is the latest version of xvid installed
the latest ac3filter
the latest corecodec and
haali media splitter.

With that you should have no problem playing
anything.

I never install any of these codec packs, whats the point?

Those three combined with cccp is all you need. Klite pack is good, but i noticed when i had it installed it I was not able to play certain files like .ogg, x264, mkv (need haali codec) and some mpeg-4. With cccp installed i could play anything. Yes VLC is mean't to be a media player that does not need a codec installed to play vide files. That holds true in most cases but formats like certain Xvid's, x264, ogg, and mkv require codec's like klite or cccp (Which i recommend) along with ac3 filter, koepi xvid, Haali Matroska Splitter to play (mkv format files). Good one x34.:)
