I know it is possible to burn a vcd or svcd and play it in a stand alone dvdplayer, my question is, is it possible(and how) to burn directly on a dvd-r and play it in de dvdplayer?

All your basically doing is making an SVCD or a VCD on a dvd. You can just fit more crap on the dvd and the dvd media supports more stuff.
