Ok I'm getting away from Micro$oft on my lappy & will probably use Ubuntu. What I am asking is if you guys could give me suggestions on the best or easiest software to use.
definately will get wine for the occasional MS only software & when I need a buzz :P
torrent client
music
burning (similiar to Nero or Ashampoo)
viewing videos (think VLC has linux version)
cant think of what else I need but any suggestions would be appreciated.
I know I could search the forums but bleh, who does that?
Nvm didnt notice the linux sub-forum, more helpful than expected there.

You'll probably get alot of help soon. I going to ubuntu myself but would highly suggest treading the Linux forums. Those are some of the most helpful forums i have ever seen. Nero and VLC have a linux only version. You could find those on what or any linux trackers.
Try this site out.

ubuntu is a VERY good choice!
anyway, the ubuntu forum is also a wonderful place for the kind of questions you asked. because there a lot of windows-to-linux switcher there, many can help you there.

burning - k3b
videos - vlc
audio - mpd + any mpd client u wish or beep media player (very low on system resources)
file manager - thunar
and my favorite app yakuake (google it)

I've been using Ubuntu for about 6 months on another machine. I must say it's easy and intuitive to use.
All the software you will ever need is included in the Program Manager.
There isn't anything on my Windows rig that I can't do on my Ubuntu machine.
enjoy.
