View Full Version : Does Peer Guardian really work?

yes, I have used google. I know there are other threads such as this one, but they are not as informative as I hoped.

Let me make this concise.

I Dl'ed peer guardian for myself. It was easy to use, but was not suitable for general web browsing. I also thought it might slow down utorrent for blocking some "bad" Ip's, which may not be bad at all.

Do you think peer Guardian actually protects you 100 percent from getting "caught" ?
If not, to what extent does it protect you, if at all?

I don't know the semantics as I've never used it but I wouldn't lay my hopes on it from not getting the "letter".

Peerguardian blocks known malicious IP addresses. This is helpful when downloading a torrent from a public tracker and there are known addresses that target certain downloads. However, this is redundant when downloading from a private tracker (mind you, usually a smaller one - not like demonoid) and unnecessary. Also, there are new IPs every day that aren't discovered for weeks. So I would say that it's a protective measure, but unnecessary if you have quality downloading habits.

lol be happy if PG can protect u 50% but the true there is no program atm that can protect u 100% as log u useing torrents u are not fully protected from anti-f*cks:D

there is also IPfilter that maybe help much better that PG but also he cant protect u 100%:)

There's always stories of antip2p groups tracking bittorrent users from non-work IPs, such as from residences, but since (I imagine) only a small percent of all torrent users have PG, the antip2p groups wouldn't bother with avoiding using IPs that are blocked in PG. Even if 50% of all users use PG, the 50% that don't use it are victims enough for antip2p. Which means the less people use PG, the better it is for those who do.

So long story short, don't use PG. It probably doesn't work at all.

Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything. 14% of people know that.

Its pointless unless you download from public trackers only. It causes negative effect in private trackers, by blocking known university/school ips (i believe) so you are missing out on seeders.

about 5 years ago my isp shut off my internet for sharing freddy vs jason on edonkey or kazaa, not sure which, shortly after that i made the switch to downloading 99% stuff from torrents, but i also started using pg or protowall from there on out and haven't had my internet shut off.

As for using ipfilter or pg, the lists come from essentially the same place and you can set either list to bock educational ips or not.

As for it hurting small trackers, i know my ip right now is on the list as a few trackers run ipfilters to even get on the website and i can't access them. I could fill out a form and tried to get it unblocked by bluetack, just haven't felt like it yet.

So your ISP tells you to quit downloading
okay
What if you switch providers? Can you start downloading again until you get a warning from them too?

I have heard something like that is happening in France.
Dont know how that kind of system is really functioning, but I dont like the sound of it...:ermm:
This bittorent world is beautiful and it would be quite a shock to loose it...
