Yes most are made in Asian countries because the cost of labor is less.

Atari did this, they would send parts to Mexico for assembly because labor was cheaper.

Most of AMD's CPUs are made in their 'Fab 30' factory in Dresden, Germany, unless I am mistaken.

Yes I think I heard something about that.Where they do the die proccess?
As for assembling though alot of it must be done in Malaysia  ,last 2 I bought were assembled there.

Not all the components are made in the same place. A lot of the times the boards are designed in USA or UK, then most parts are made in eastern asian countries, some maybe near where they are designed, then the boards are probably assembled (i got no hard eveidence though).

The labour in US, western europe and Japan is simply too expensive for competitive companies. Example (this is real), a two companies bids for the same job, one's best offer goes down to $2.8/piece manufacturing in China, for about 10c profit/piece; the other decides to manufactures in UK, to avoid closing their factory there, and the lowest they can go to is $3.4/piece without significant loss. Guess who got the job?

The general trend in electronics now is: manufacturing in moving to China, especially Canton province (this maybe irrelevant, but d'u know that 1/3 or world's shoes are made in China? The other day a buddy said to me "You know why cold war will never happen between China and US? 'cos then Americans will have no shoes."
And designing is moving to India (did you know they make more than 1/4 or world's software already?! They're pushing Califonia into recession, says some)
