custom built, all my 4 pcs.
i refuse to buy pre-assembled PCs, as u always get ripped off or pay for useless windows licenses etc etc. what a waste of money.

+1
agree, usually people with less knowledge of computer hardwares buy brand computers and pay more and they always have a justification! and that is the warranty !! well they don't know that in a year or so the price of their hardwares drop to 1/4 th of their orginal price and those brand companies out there are more than happy to fix your broken parts and that is because you have bought a warranty package 10 times more expensive than that part it self!!!

My first PC was an eMachines and after two weeks or so I opened it up to add RAM and thought "Is this it? I could make this!".
Everything since has been self-assembled.

This doesn't mean I have a problem with manufactured PCs...on the contrary, I think that below @$500 you're better off buying rather than building.
As an individual consumer you lack the purchasing power of the OEMs and they can sell some pretty nice stuff for very little money.

Custom build, prebuilts like hp are a just a waste of time unless you're using it strictly for web browsing and msn.

I find with the proprietory systems they get you one way or the other . No video slot to upgrade , only two memory slots etc. I don't have a problem buying used but never a new system .

I always go to the whitebox stores as your choices are endless , " you " config how you like it . Better quality and upgrades are painless .

My very first system was a 386 running windows 3.1. I think HP made it.
That's the only store bought system I ever had, custom builds ever since.

My personal computer are Apple, Dell, and HP. I custom built my own a few years back, which was a nice experience, but I find it's easier to get a good deal on a PC through one of Dell's promotions than it would ever be to build your own. For instance, my parents were able to get a new computer with a widescreen LCD for $400. The LCD, priced at newegg, was $200 alone.

doesn't upgrading void your warranty? i had an old HP computer and on the casing they had a sticker saying warranty void if case is opened.

Custom made. My aunt had a branded one and she had a bit of problems with it and fought with it about 6 months to get it fixed. Talk about poor customer support. Eventually she got way better model for the same price and a quite powerful free laptop.

Assembled PC's are the way to go. Cheaper & more choices. The best part, no junk softwares preloaded.

I'm not surprised that "custom" is the most popular choice but I'd have thought Dell would place higher than HP.
