can sombeody explain to me what the progress bar in the right bottom corner means?

it keeps showing up and stays there, not moving any further. if i restart azureus it disappears.

yes. as i mentioned there is no progress. the bar just sits there and doesn't move any further.

it doesn't seem to have any effect on the overall functionality of the client, but i want to know what it is.

Well i see that bar from time to time, but mine goes away after it finishes.

That machine which uses Azureus 3.0.4.2 is OSX ver 10.4.11
