Fucking parents again.

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.

Nobody has ever called me by my official name.
It was like ma folks realised they had made a mistake on the way back from the hospital.
I only found out my real first name when I was about 9 or 10.

Got my name from my Dad's; I'm a "Jr.".

His first name was given to him as his father's brother died when he was young and it was a sort of tribute.

Middle comes from another tribute to the other brother who was shot down in WW2 over the ocean and never found.

No idea about my last name. :idunno:

No rod.

I fear Ben really did think his name was 'Spaz' til a kindly priest took him under his wing and gave him a totally different alias altogether.

Hera / Juno - goddess of marriage

Athena / Minerva - goddess of art & war

Hestia - goddess of the hearth,

Crabgirl's name could be Pandora. Pandora let evil and misery out in a pristine world, and then kept hope for herself.

Aww. That's a lovely thing to say, thank you!

However, my dad was a lover of the myths and legends of the British Isles...I was lucky though, I could have been called Piskie Black-shuck or something.

While the story of Pandora is not a British folktale per se The Danes did invade the British Isles and they did leave a lot of their culture behind.:whistling

Typical response from a Pandora.

Mine is common or garden and there has been in the family for years (about three centuries at least). Thought I was the last as more imagination came into play but my niece has just gone and kept the chain going.

Edit: by naming her son obviousment.

That is such a depressing view, yet bitterly true.
Might as well nuke ourselves then.
They should put that quote on the walls of maternity wards.

The reason I mention it is cuz my kid is making his confirmation soon and we're trying to decide on a name. It has to be the name of a saint, apparently.

I want Sebastian because of Belle and Sebastian and that Goya painting.

He wants Martin. :dabs:

I chose My Father's Father's name for my confirmation. My Brother chose my Mother's Father's name.

I pretended it was a deep, meaningful family thing but it was really because you had to research the Saint. My Paternal Grandfather was Joseph, so a bit of an easy one there.

Coincidentally my own Father was a Joiner.

True story.

What is the use of this thread when no one actually mentions what their real name is?

Anyways, my first name is Sonja and it's derived from Sophia, which is Greek for wisdom. My dad chose it and I think my mum just went along with it because it starts with an 's' ( both my sister's names start with an 's' as well)

My middle names are just my paternal grandparents' names. I don't have a confirmation name though. We don't hold with that nonsense in Belgian RC church

Everyone knows my name is Jim. From my Mother's Father also James.

I think I've made it reasonably clear my confirmation name is Joseph but I don't count that as part of my actual name.

And also I've made that disk for you but haven't had a chance to get it posted.

Sorry about that.
