I have been using Trillian for many many years now and it's great even with its problems. Miranda IM is good too but I prefer Trillian.

Pidgin (was called GAIM before).

Pidgin is faster than Trillian, try loading up 600 people on Pidgin versus Trillian and you will see a difference.

My Trillian started acting up weird and crashed, so I decided to try Pidgin. And it's pretty awesome. Lightweight, lots of plugins, easy to configure. In other words I'm not going back to trillian, atleast for now.

Trillian has a bad bug that has been known for 2-4 years now and its still not fixed. I'm talking about the MSN disconnect/reconnect bug. If you lose your internet connection while connected to MSN and when your connection comes back online, trillian wont reconnect MSN automatically. You need to manually execute disconnect and then reconnect and it works. What a joke. Thought you should know :)
