:D your boss askied you to go to Chevys and pick up a burger for him. You can't decide whether to drive or walk. If it's less than a mile to chevys, you'll walk and get some exercise.
The map you have has a ratio scale of 1:24,000. One inch on the map equals 24,000 inches in the real world.
You measure two inches on the map from your office to Chevys..
1) How far is it, in feet, from your office to Chevys
2) Do you drive or walk?

if you guys over there were smart enough you would change your stupid system to the metric system so these simple calculations could be made without the help of a calculator :D

My smart enough what?

lol exactly...

It should have been you're NOT your!! This mistake is so common now a days, its just like people mixing up ect when its actually etc. :)

and the answer would be 4000ft, so walk.

...and I agree with danio that the metric system needs to be implemented everywhere although I dont see that happening in the neat future. In most of the engineering industry they use imperial units, pick any of the major companies in Britain; Rolls Royce, Atkins, BAE Systems any one and they all use Imperial units, but there is certainly a push to standardize metric units in Europe in all industries.

Our "stupid system" is just fine.

If you needed a calculator, you're the stupid one. :idunno:

BTW, 4,000 feet? I'm driving.

It is 3/4 of a mile or 1.5 mile round trip (there are 5280 feet in a mile). As a human walks about 4 miles an hour the journey should take about 12 minutes each way plus queue time in the burger bar - say a 30 minute task in total.

However, as the boss is the one eating crappy junk food he is the one that should be walking.

All that rote learning of distances under the tutelage of the dragon that managed to to convince the Education Department that she was human finally came in useful.

Which would you prefer, the role of pot or kettle?

My cheap-ass merkin metric converter only translates "neat" as somewhere between "a coon's age" and "when hell freezes over".
Could you be more specific?

I'd drive unless it's in a 5 block radius of my office.
