The Nanking Massacre, commonly known as the Rape of Nanking, was an infamous genocidal war crime committed by the Japanese military in Nanjing, then capital of the Republic of China, after it fell to the Imperial Japanese Army on December 13, 1937. The duration of the massacre is not clearly defined, although the violence lasted well into the next six weeks, until early February 1938.

During the occupation of Nanjing, the Japanese army committed numerous atrocities, such as rape, looting, arson and the execution of prisoners of war and civilians. Although the executions began under the pretext of eliminating Chinese soldiers disguised as civilians, it is claimed that a large number of innocent men were intentionally identified as enemy combatants and executed—or simply killed outright—as the massacre gathered momentum. A large number of women and children were also killed, as rape and murder became more widespread.

According to the Judgment International Military Tribunal for the Far East, "estimates made at a later date indicate that the total number of civilians and prisoners of war murdered in Nanking and its vicinity during the first six weeks of the Japanese occupation was over 200,000. That these estimates are not exaggerated is borne out by the fact that burial societies and other organizations counted more than 155,000 bodies which they buried. They also reported that most of those were bound with their hands tied behind their backs. These figures do not take into account those persons whose bodies were destroyed by burning, or by throwing them into the Yangtze River, or otherwise disposed of by Japanese."[1] The extent of the atrocities is debated between China and Japan, with numbers[2] ranging from some Japanese claims of several hundred,[3] to the Chinese claim of a non-combatant death toll of 300,000[4]. A number of Japanese researchers consider 100,000 – 200,000 to be an approximate value.[5] Other nations usually believe the death toll to be between 150,000–300,000.[6] This number was first promulgated in January of 1938 by Harold Timperly, a journalist in China during the Japanese invasion, based on reports from contemporary eyewitnesses. Other sources, including Iris Chang's The Rape of Nanking, also promote 300,000 as the death toll. In addition, on December 12, 2007, newly declassified U.S. government documents revealed an additional toll of around 500,000 in the area surrounding Nanking before it was occupied.[7]

In addition to the number of victims, some Japanese critics have even disputed whether the atrocity ever happened. While the Japanese government has acknowledged the incident did occur[citation needed], some Japanese nationalists have argued, partly using the Imperial Japanese Army's claims at the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, that the death toll was military in nature and that no such civilian atrocities ever occurred. This claim has been criticised by various figures, citing statements of non-Chinese at the Tribunal, other eyewitnesses and by photographic and archaeological evidence that civilian deaths did occur.

Condemnation of the massacre is a major focal point of Chinese nationalism. In Japan, however, public opinion over the severity of the massacre remains widely divided — this is evidenced by the fact that whereas some Japanese commentators refer to it as the 'Nanking massacre' (南京大虐殺, Nankin daigyakusatsu?), others use the more ambivalent term 'Nanking Incident' (南京事件, Nankin jiken?). However, this term can also refer to a separate Nanjing Incident that occurred during the 1927 Nationalist seizure of the city as a part of the Northern Expedition, in which foreigners in the city were attacked. they massacred all of the men and children, and raped and killed the woman, both young and old

it was then covered up and nobody knew about it until ~10 years ago when a book was written on it exposing the truth.

Nanjing Massacre and the Tokyo War Crimes Trial

This is basically what the Japaneses did to the war criminals captured during their invasion into China during World War II lasted from the early 1930's to 1945. Read entirely and this is really a very very disturbing piece of history.
A large number of refugees tried to escape from the Japanese by trying to cross the Yangtze River. They were trapped on the east bank because no transportation was available; many of them tried to swim across the river. Meanwhile, the Japanese arrived and fired at the people on the shore and in the river. A Japanese soldier reported that the next day he saw an uncountable number of dead bodies of adults and children covering the whole river. He estimated that more than 50,000 people were killed at this tragic incident of the Nanking massacre.
When the Japanese troops first entered the city on the 13th, the streets were crowded with more than 100,000 refugees or injured Chinese soldiers. The Japanese relentlessly fired at these people. The next morning, tanks and artilleries entered the city and killing of people continued. Dead bodies covered the two major streets of the city. The streets became "streets of blood" as a result of the two-day annihilation.
A large number of Chinese soldiers had already been captured in the suburban areas before the Japanese entered the city. A large number of young men who were arrested, together with those who had been captured earlier, were sent outside of the city to be massacred, from several thousand to tens of thousand at a time. In most cases, the captives were shot by machine guns, and those who were still alive were bayoneted individually. In some cases, the Japanese poured gasoline onto the captives and burned them alive. In some cases, poison gas was used.
Numerous atrocities occurred within and around the city, and the victims were largely civilians. Japanese soldiers invented and exercised inhumane and barbaric methods of killing. The brutalities included shooting, stabbing, cutting open the abdomen, excavating the heart, decapitation (beheading), drowning, burning, punching the body and the eyes with an awl, and even castration or punching through the vagina.
An estimated 20,000 women were raped by the Japanese soldiers during the six weeks of the Nanking Massacre, most were brutally killed afterwards. The Japanese soldiers even raped girls less than ten years old, women over seventy years old, pregnant women, and nuns.Many women were gang raped. Some Japanese even forced fathers to rape their daughters, sons to rape their mothers, etc. Those who resisted were killed immediately.
The Japanese organized burning of buildings in the city. After they had set fire to buildings using either gasoline or some other inflammable chemicals, they hid, waited for and killed people who came to extinguish the fire.

On 26 August 1942, the exhausted and starving militia troops were finally joined on the northernmost ridge of the Owen Stanleys at Isurava by the first of three battalion from the 2/14th Brigade. These were combat toughened Australian troops who had returned from the Middle East. Despite these reinforcements, the Australians were still outnumbered on the Kokoda Track by five to one, and were forced to carry out a bloody fighting withdrawal in which both sides suffered very heavy casualties. The Japanese advance ground to a halt on a ridge where they could actually see the lights of Port Moresby. The Japanese supply lines were in chaos, and the surviving Japanese troops were starving and exhausted. Unable to proceed, and denied reinforcements because of the critical situation facing the Japanese on Guadalcanal, the Japanese were ordered to abandon the capture of Port Moresby and retreat to their beachheads on the northern coast. They were closely pursued by fresh reinforcements from Australia.

An especially abhorrent aspect of the heavy fighting on the Kokoda Track during the Australian fighting withdrawal is the failure of any Australian taken prisoner by the Japanese to survive capture. The Japanese are known to have frequently murdered prisoners of war, singly and in batches, on little if any provocation. Resistance appears to have been especially effective in provoking murderous instincts in the Japanese military. The Japanese were infuriated by the strong resistance to their advance put up by the Australians on the Kokoda Track. They had suffered heavy losses, and the Australian fighting withdrawal had seriously disrupted their timetable for crossing the mountains and had caused their own troops to run short of food. In those circumstances, the Japanese would not want to waste their own food on prisoners of war whom they had been taught to despise. The circumstances point to a strong probability that all captured Australians were immediately executed by the Japanese. Even more horrifying, is the evidence that the Japanese killed and ate captured Australians when they had not exhausted their own food supplies.

As the Australians pursued the retreating Japanese along the Kokoda Track, they came upon evidence that the Japanese had been eating captured Australian soldiers. After a fierce clash with the Japanese at Templeton's Crossing, an Australian patrol was forced to withdraw and leave behind six Australian dead and four wounded. Reinforcements arrived on the following day, and the Australians were able to attack again and capture the Japanese position. The Australians troops were horrified to find that the Japanese had been eating both the wounded and dead Australians who had been left behind on the previous day. Corporal Bill Hedges describes the ghastly scene:

"The Japanese had cannibalised our wounded and dead soldiers..We found them with meat stripped off their legs and half-cooked meat in the Japanese dishes (pots)".

One of Corporal Hedges closest comrades was among the butchered bodies. He said:

"I was heartily disgusted and disappointed to see my good friend lying there, with the flesh stripped off his arms and legs; his uniform torn off him."

Shortly afterwards, the Australian corporal was appalled to discover that the Japanese had not resorted to cannibalism because of starvation. He said:

"We found dumps with rice and a lot of tinned food. So they weren't starving and having to eat flesh because they were hungry."



"Because of the strain involved, scouts were rotated at short intervals. I do not remember the name of the scout who led the second platoon, but it was he who relieved me. Within three minutes after taking the lead, he was hit by a burst from a machine gun. The Japanese had dug in on a coral hill and were waiting for us. We took whatever cover we could find, moved into firing positions, and battled throughout the day and into the night. Daylight came and we put feelers out to see if the Japanese were still there. They had moved out and the scouts body was gone.
We moved up the hill into the evacuated Japanese positions. There, we found him. His body had been carved as though he were a mere piece of beef. All the flesh was gone from his legs, arms, buttocks and chest and his heart and kidneys were missing. We had no doubt that they were eating our dead.
No prisoners, we vowed to ourselves"

"In the morning 9-th of March 1945 about 0900, together with late sgt Sewell we found body of private Josh KIA 8-th of March.
The body was in following state:
(a) all cloth was removed
(b) both hands cut off close to armpits
(c) stomach was removed together with heart, liver and entrails
(d) all muscles cut off from the bones
(e) we could not find hands, heart and entrails
(f) the only untouched body parts were head and feet.
Japanese mess tin full of apparently human meat was about five feet from body of Pvt Josh, right between two dead japanese soldiers."

these are just a few of the numerous incidents, which indicate that cannibalism was widespread among the japanese army. they were willing to pay any price to survive when their food supplies were cut off. however, its not that big a surprise that such a thing should happen in japan since there are numerous traditions through the ages which show their value of the human life. right from the slaughtering of heads for a mere insult during the samurai era to the latest incident where a cannibal was hailed as a celebrity after he was released, the roots of disregard for the human life i n japan grow very deep indeed.

Unit 731 (大日本帝国陸軍第731 部隊) was a covert biological warfare research and development unit of the Imperial Japanese Army that undertook lethal human experimentation during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945) and World War II.
Prisoners of war were subjected to vivisection without anesthesia.
Vivisections were performed on prisoners infected with various diseases. Scientists performed invasive surgery on prisoners, removing organs to study the effects of disease on the human body. These were conducted while the patients were alive because it was felt that the decomposition process would affect the results. The infected and vivisected prisoners included men, women, children, and infants.
Vivisections were also performed on pregnant women, sometimes impregnated by doctors, and the fetus removed.
Prisoners had limbs amputated in order to study blood loss.
Those limbs that were removed were sometimes re-attached to the opposite sides of the body.
Some prisoners' limbs were frozen and amputated, while others had limbs frozen then thawed to study the effects of the resultant untreated gangrene and rotting.
Some prisoners had their stomachs surgically removed and the esophagus reattached to the intestines.
Parts of the brain, lungs, liver, etc. were removed from some prisoners.

In 2007, Doctor Ken Yuasa testified to the Japan Times that "I was afraid during my first vivisection, but the second time around, it was much easier. By the third time, I was willing to do it." He believes at least 1,000 persons, including surgeons, were involved in vivisections over mainland China.

A man and a woman making love in the front seat. The woman's cry wakes the little boy sleeping in the back seat soon after. The boy thinks his mother is being attacked. He starts hitting the man. The result, according to Shukan Shincho magazine, was the start of a tragic incident that resulted in the discovery of 4-year-old Ryosuke Shindo's body in a rice paddy ditch.

A month after the discovery, Ryosuke's 32-year-old mother, Mika Shindo, and her lover, 44-year-old high school janitor Hiroshi Hatakeyama, were arrested for the boy's murder.

The mother's trial has recently opened in Akita.

"When Mika turned up in the courtroom, she had a real hangdog look on her face and she didn't focus her eyes on any particular point," a reporter covering the case for a local newspaper tells Shukan Shincho. "Mika and Ryosuke lived in Daisen, Akita Prefecture, with her common-law husband. The lover was frequently on business trips and away from the home. Mika was really lonely, so hooked up with Hatakeyama and they become lovers on the side."

Ryosuke's death occurred while Shindo's partner was on a business trip in neighboring Niigata Prefecture. On the day of the death, Mika and Ryosuke had gone for a drive with Hatakeyama, staying overnight at a love hotel. They stopped off in a cul-de-sac in Daisen. When the illicit lovers noticed the little boy had nodded off in the back seat, they began making love in the front seat of the car. And that's what triggered the events that led to Ryosuke's death.

"Ryosuke wouldn't stop crying because he thought his mother was being hurt, so Hatakeyama withdrew from Mika, who turned around and punched her little boy in the face," the reporter says. "Hatakeyama then jumped in, smashing a can of coffee into the boy's face any number of times, then throttling him until he stopped breathing."

Ryosuke was still breathing at this stage, but it wasn't going to last much longer.

"Hatakeyama was worried that he was going to get caught for bashing Ryosuke, so he convinced Mika to dump the boy. He told her that he was about to be made a full-time employee and that she could go and live with him as long as she promised not to tell anybody he was involved in the boy's injuries," the reporter tells Shukan Shincho. "Mika believed him and hurled Ryosuke into the rice paddy ditch and they left him there."

Shindo had a history of being used by men, including one fireman lover she tried to woo by setting a fire and ending up charged with arson. But it was a connection with another man that led directly to her arrest for Ryosuke's murder. The boy's body revealed a ring-shaped bruise on his face. It was a mark left from when Shindo had punched him. And the ring she wore at that time had been a present from her common-law husband.

The murder

Issei Sagawa served time in a French jail for the murder of the Dutch student Renée Hartevelt, a classmate at the Sorbonne Academy in Paris. In June 11, 1981, Sagawa was studying avant garde literature. He invited her to dinner under the pretense of literary conversation. Upon her arrival, he shot her in the neck with a rifle while she sat with her back to him at a desk, then began to carry out his plan of eating her. However, the French psychologists found him legally insane and unfit to stand trial. Instead, he was deported back to Japan, where he was put in a mental institution. However, the deportation order did not specify how long Sagawa must remain in the institution. Fifteen months later, Sagawa checked himself out, and has been a free man ever since.

Unable to get Renée, who so perfectly matched his dreams, out of his head, Sagawa formulated a plan. Travelling home on the métro one afternoon, he was thrilled to come face-to-face with the girl who had so dominated his thoughts of late. It was chance, their meeting, and Sagawa would not pass it up. Renée Hartevelt recognised him from the literature class they shared and smiled politely as he sat down beside her. The pair had their studies in common and so Sagawa used this to strike up a casual conversation. Though fundamentally shy and retiring, Sagawa knew what he wanted. For her part, the astute Renée Hartevelt recognised that behind the retiring exterior there was an obviously intelligent young man, possessed of much wit and charm.

On this occasion, their dialogue went no further than mutual academic interests, but it was an important development for Sagawa. The ice had been broken and events were warming up. He eagerly anticipated their next literature class together, where he intended to move things along. After the lecture, it was suggested by the group that they go out that evening for a meal at a local Greek restaurant. Sagawa could barely suppress his joy when Renée expressed her desire to attend. Being part of the group, the invitation was also extended to the man with the plan.

The polite and affable Sagawa had tried hard to ingratiate himself with his classmates. His eastern origins interested those in the study group who were keen to sample Japanese cuisine. Right on cue, Sagawa set a date for them all to visit his apartment, where he would prepare a special meal for them all – a dish called sukiyaki, which consisted of traditional meat and noodles. Initially they all acquiesced, including Renée Hartevelt.

When it came to the evening in question however, all but one of his fellow students failed to show. Sagawa had known that most people found him a bit odd and he considered himself to be without a single person he could call his friend, so he was hardly able to conceal his surprise and pleasure at the fatalistic decision made by Renée Hartevelt to arrive as his sole guest.

Repairing to Sagawa’s small open plan living room, the pair conversed happily about their interests, love of music and mutual studies, with Sagawa playing up to his intellectual accomplishments. Like a budding Hannibal Lecter, he convivially imparted his sophisticated classical music and culinary tastes.

In a constant state of arousal by the girl who so obsessed him, Sagawa was tempted to follow through, that very night, with the plan he had devised. Restraining him was the fact that he was unprepared for Renée showing up alone and delivering herself to him so readily. If he could somehow orchestrate another encounter, he would have her.

Inviting Renée to talk further about herself, the answer presented itself when she mentioned that she spoke three languages fluently; English, French and German. Taking into account that she was short on finances, Sagawa swooped, expressing feigned interest in learning to speak German so that he might read, in its original language, some romantic poetry he was fond of. If Renée was interested in tutoring him, he would pay for her services. She accepted. Upon her return for his first “German lesson” Sagawa thought he would strike.

When Renée arrived at his flat several nights later, as psyched up and jittery with excitement as he was, Sagawa had last-minute reservations when faced with the reality of what he was about to do. The complex and powerful fantasy world he occupied was just that, fantasy. As all-consuming as it was, it was not yet real. Though he had been here before, he was now confronted with the reality of harming somebody and could not go through with it.

When Renée left that night, another opportunity missed, Sagawa berated himself for his cowardice. His fear tied his dark passion in knots and he had lost an inner battle. A lot of killers will claim that with some of their murders they struggled not to murder a victim. In Sagawa’s case this was reversed. He found the question of whether or not to kill enormously taxing. Highly agitated, he wondered if he could go through with it the next time Renée visited. Simply masturbating was no longer enough to hold his demons at bay. He knew what he wanted; he had to do this. Next time there must be no turning back.

But next time he failed again. Anxious but relieved that Renée seemed not to have heard the weapon’s dry click; Sagawa quickly returned the rifle to the cupboard and flopped down next to her, pretending to absorb the remainder of his second German lesson.

Did the intense Sagawa see the gun-jamming incident as a sign of fate, an indicator that he should not go through with his diabolical plan? Not at all. On Thursday, 11 June 1981, Sagawa again took up his rifle and again crept up behind a preoccupied Renée Hartevelt. This time he blasted a hole in the back of the young woman’s neck and watched as she collapsed forward onto the living room carpet, blood pooling around her head. Sagawa would later say he had been so shocked at the result of his actions that he fainted. Whether or not this is credible is unknown; we have only the murderer’s word that this normal human reaction occurred to him.

When Sagawa came to, he claimed to have been feeling quite ill and experienced a rather otherworldly quality as he gazed upon his beautiful companion laying dead, murdered by him, her blood all over his carpet. Sagawa says he was afraid of the corpse he had created and that this very real act of murder was a far cry from the potent sexual phantasm he had nurtured for so long. Evidently the sudden repulsion did not incapacitate him for long as his next actions were to strip the girl of all her clothing and bite down hard on her left buttock.

Sagawa next went to his kitchen and returned with the sharpest implement he could find, an eight-inch carving knife. Gazing longingly at the smooth, cream-coloured flesh which had suffused his dream world, he got down on his hands and knees to use his knife on the dead girl. Slicing through what the killer would later describe as a "thick, yellow layer of fatty tissue," he reached the red meat he craved. Slowly, as if looking through the eyes of another, he drew the knife blade back and forth, neatly severing a piece of flesh. Placing this in his mouth, he began to chew, savouring what he says tasted like raw tuna fish. As Sagawa ate, he was not surprised to learn that he had an erection. Renée Hartevelt tasted exquisite. Sliding the corpse onto it's back, Sagawa then carved a section of flesh from the upper thigh, which, lost in his ecstasy, he consumed on the spot. So aroused was he by all this, Sagawa undressed himself and had intercourse with the partially cannabilized corpse.

Momentarily spent, he experienced again the stark veracity of what he had just done, and now there was a dead body, bleeding profusely on his living room floor, which needed getting rid of. The next stage of the plan was addressed in Issei Sagawa’s tiny bathroom. Heaving the body into the bath tub he used the same knife with which he had excised some of Renée’s flesh to begin cutting off both her legs. Next he hacked away at both arms until he was able to wrench them free of their sockets. Finally he plunged his knife into Renée’s throat and began severing her head. Throughout this nightmarish task, Sagawa kept the cold tap running, to get rid of the blood.

Issei Sagawa always claimed the act of dismemberment was not pleasurable for him. Again, we have only his word for this. Certainly, a lot of sexual psychopaths who mutilate their victim’s bodies experience gratification from doing so. Sagawa’s self-confessed revulsion at his deeds did not deter him from cutting more segments from Renée’s thighs and buttocks, wrapping them in plastic and placing them in his freezer for later consumption.

Slicing off one of Renée’s breasts proved distinctly unappealing to the killer, and he was incredibly disappointed that this part of the fantasy, like the murder and dismemberment, was not as satisfying as he had imagined it would be.

Sagawa says the amputated breast resembled animal offal and constituted a “revolting lump of fat.” He would not be dining on Renée Hartevelt’s breast after all.

Issei Sagawa ventured from his flat over the next couple of days, disposing of the murdered girl’s clothing. He retained her trousers, presumably as a trophy - a personal item belonging to the victim that has significance for the offender - with which the newly initiated sex killer could relive his horrid crime.

Purchasing a couple of large suitcases, Sagawa stuffed the collection of body parts inside and sealed them. Perhaps in an effort to show that nothing untoward overshadowed his life, he accompanied fellow students on a trip to the cinema. Presumably his performance had been as effective as those given by the actors in the movie they watched, as all recalled Sagawa appearing relaxed and in robust good humour.

That same night he returned to his studio flat to eat some more of Renée Hartevelt. Taking several cutlets from the fridge, he fried the flesh in a pan, cooking it through to his liking. He says it tasted like veal, but was tough and chewy, despite his attempts to tenderise. Flavoured with salt, pepper and mustard, the meal was nonetheless highly enjoyable for Sagawa, who sat there again in a state of total sexual excitement. Each time he ate more of her flesh, his exhilaration would “peak.” He could not have enough of his new meat.

By Saturday night, Sagawa concluded that it was time to get rid of the body. The dismembered limbs and trunk were beginning to exude an unpleasant odour in the warm apartment. Tokyo teacher arrested for stealing boys' underpants at knifepoint




TOKYO — A 26-year-old male teacher at a primary school in western Tokyo was arrested Monday on suspicion of stealing underpants from junior high school boys aged 12-13 whom he forced to disrobe at knifepoint, police said. Takayuki Yamamoto, who teaches sixth grade at Hamura Nishi Elementary School, has admitted to the allegations, the police said.



Officials of the Hamura city education board said there had been no problems with his work.
He is suspected of ordering eight boys who were playing on the grounds of an elementary school in Akishima, also in western Tokyo, on the night of Jan 20 to take off their pants at knifepoint.
Two of them escaped but the remaining six boys were forced to take off their jeans and underpants, which the teacher is suspected of stealing, the police said.
The teacher is also suspected of taking a mobile phone from one of the boys and making a nuisance call to his home after the incident.

UEDA, Nagano -- A man was ordered Friday to spend 12 years behind bars for persistently raping his daughters.
The Ueda branch of the Nagano District Court convicted the 38-year-old unemployed man of rape.
"The defendant's crime is selfish and malicious as it violated the victims' dignity," Presiding Judge Yasushi Kawaguchi said as he handed down the ruling. "The mental and physical suffering of the victims is immeasurable and it will have a negative impact on them in the future."
The man, whose name is being withheld to protect the victims' privacy, raped his own daughters at their home in Nagano Prefecture between May and July this year, according to the ruling.
The defendant reportedly began to molest his daughters in 2003 under the pretext of discipline. He started raping them in 2004 while his wife was away from home, according to sources close to the victims.
The incident came to light after one of the victims consulted with her school. After being alerted by the municipal government that has jurisdiction over the school, local police arrested the father in August for rape. He pleaded guilty to the charges during his trial.
The ages of the daughters have been withheld to protect their privacy.
