I would start around about 1985.
Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns and Alan Moore's The Killing Joke are the titles that totally changed public perception of Batman.
A Death in the Family imo is pretty weak compared to those.
The Cult is pretty good.
Batman; Year one.

I had no idea different authors did batman. I thought that an author owns the charactor, or did the original one sell it to DC Comics or something?

Batman belongs to DC comics who in turn belong to Warner Brothers.
They can pretty much do what they like with him.
Those atrocious films are proof of that.
Bat's is a franchise and a very profitable one.

So batman wouldn't really be batman if the original creator had kept ahold of it. It's sad how you need to sell out like that.

Thats the nature of banking and the comics industry.
It grows with its readers and its readers' wallet.

Sad. Nothing is left untouched by corporations.

That's why Moore et al set up America's Best Comics. To combat all that shite.
And that's why I download my comics now.
I just breaks my heart to give my dough to Warner Bros.
Google America's Best Comics and you'll see what I mean.

I should really find a comic dealer near me. I'll get all of ABC's comics. How many of Moore's comics were published by ABC rather than DC.

Loads. fan site. check it out. (http://www.alanmoorefansite.com/)
But don't let DC and Marvel put you off. He's done some of his best work for them and it shouldn't be ignored.
Wait till you read Top Ten. You're gonna cream em.

Batman: Year One
Frank Miller

It is basically the story of Batman... Gotham City's Dark Knight... who he is and how he came to be.

Follow that with Batman: the Dark Knight Returns
